Shoemaker malpractice suit settled after six-year crash case
Former jockey Billy Shoemaker agreed to a roughly 2.5 million out-of-court settlement with a hospital and seven doctors after four weeks of testimony over an accident near San Dimas. Shoemaker, now quadriplegic, said alcohol was involved but not drunken driving. He resumes training from a wheelchair in San Marino with his daughter.

The 15 member Higher Education Committee approved AB 101 8-6 in Sacramento to insert sexual orientation into Education Code nondiscrimination protections for students teachers and staff. Amendments shield Boy Scouts ROTC and religious clubs from impact while critics call the bill window dressing and warn it promotes homosexuality to children. Two Democrats opposed the measure.

Former SMUSD Administrator Kenneth F. White Dies at 83
Kenneth F. White, 83, longtime San Marino-Mount Shasta area schools administrator, died Friday March 21 after a brief hospital stay in Redding California. He served SMUSD from 1938 to 1973, including 23 years as Huntington School principal. Memorial services were held in Lakehead. He moved from San Marino to Shasta County 23 years ago. Penido Named Fire Chief in San Marino Cites Five 1997 Goals
John Penido, previously director of fire operations, was named San Marino Fire Chief by City Manager Debbi Bell. Bell credited him with vastly improving the department. Penido outlined five major 1997 goals including enhanced emergency preparedness, stronger fire prevention, reinspections of Enhanced Fire Protection Zone properties and business occupancies, facility and equipment upgrades, and reinforced training and fiscal commitment.
