The Public Utilities Commission approved a new rate schedule for the California Water and Telephone Company in the San Gabriel Valley Division effective on or after April 1. The plan raises the typical monthly charge for 36 000 cubic feet of water from 5 19 to 6 25 and public fire hydrant service from 2 to 2 50, pending completion of work to fix low pressure in the Euclid area.

Services were held Monday at San Marino Community Church for Christine Hemmings of San Pasqual street Pasadena. She died March 20 at home. Survivors include one daughter Helen J. Gardner of Lorain road, two sisters Ruth Keehn of Glendale and Sophie Josephson of Minneapolis, three brothers Rudolph Westdal John Westdal and Bjorgvin Westdal, and two grandchildren. A Minnesota native, she had lived in Pasadena since 1952. Interment was at San Gabriel Cemetery.

City Receives $36,924 In Sales Use Tax Money
San Marino City Hall reports $36,924 in state administered local sales and use tax receipts for the first quarter of 1958. Last fiscal year’s Q1 totaled $41,011, while total last year receipts were $130,250. Year to date this year amounting to $105,379. The Board of Equalization notes most payments come from taxpayers quarterly reporting. A statewide first quarter distribution totaled $44,960,670.

Maurice Jones Jr was elected chairman of the California State Scholarship Commission at a Sacramento meeting. The commission named 2500 semi finalists for the 1957 58 state scholarship competition and will select over 700 new award winners for the 1958 59 year. Former City Mayor Honored at New York Life Dedication
Clark E. Bell former mayor of this city was honored at the dedication of the New York Life Insurance Company building at 115 North El Molino Pasadena. A portrait was unveiled by Leland F. Lyons NY Life vice president and Charles F. Edwards regional VP. Bell served 1947 to 1952 as mayor and retired in 1947 as inspector of agencies for Southern California and Arizona.

Two men were arrested by San Marino police on suspicion of burglarizing pay telephone boxes. The suspects were stopped Thursday night by Officer R. L. Canning in a car matching the description of a vehicle seen leaving the scene of a prior phone booth burglary. Edward Pirozzi, 21, of North Cherokee, Los Angeles, and Harry Lee Reinhardt, 22, of 5754 Tujunga, North Hollywood, are held on theft suspicions.
