Dr. Claude Buss of Stanford University renowned for Far East studies will discuss Current Problems in East Asia at the Stanford Forum in Pasadena. The event, chaired by Jay Niblo, is set for 6 30 p m at the Pepper Mill 795 East Walnut Street. Reservations may be made at Madison 70653.
Notices honor John B Long of CNPA death at 89. Long founded National Newspaper Week in 1939 and led CNPA for 34 years. Born November 24, 1894 in Council Bluffs Iowa, he worked at Omaha Bee and Des Moines Register and Tribune before guiding CNPA from California. Interment at Forest Lawn Mausoleum.
The San Marino City Council refused a Red Cross request to display a banner across Huntington drive during a blood bank event citing city policy. Members floated alternatives including flags at the Woman's Club and Library, a bus stop, and other sites while also addressing a postponed alley steps vacation and various public lighting and park projects.
Friends fill Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn on a rainy day to bid farewell to John Budd Long former general manager of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The service honors a long career in the newspaper industry with over 200 floral displays and remarks from Carroll W. Parcher and Dr. James Whitcomb Brougher Jr.
The Tribune notes the death of John Budd Long of Shakespears drive last week. He had resigned as general manager of the California Newspaper Publishers Association prior to his passing.

Junior Achievement teaches teens about the American private enterprise system and enables them to run miniature firms with adult guidance.
San Marino Chamber of Commerce announces its annual installation dinner to be held Wednesday April 4 at Pierres on Huntington Drive. Harold W Wright of Rose Avenue Los Angeles will honor outgoing president Dave Fiscus and help install new officers. Ben and Beth folk song artists, known from TV radio and records, perform. Mayor Harry W. Hitchcock proclaims March 22, 1962 Crippled Children's Day in San Marino to support the Easter Seal campaign aiding Los Angeles County handicapped children through the Crippled Children's Society. Citizens urged to donate and use mailed Easter Seals.
The San Marino High School varsity basketball team was feted at the ninth annual banquet at Embers in Arcadia. Coach Garland Lewis presented awards including blue and white SM trophies and honors for the All Rio Hondo team. Jim Edmonds, captain of the ’62 squad, praised the season while emphasizing sportsmanship as vital. Ronald Glasoe urged volunteers for the Stadium campaign and announced a March 26 joint meeting with the San Marino Community Council featuring Ernest Loebbecke of Title Insurance and Trust Company as speaker.
A person to person drive to raise funds for the San Marino High School Stadium Fund begins next week as the Stadium Committee finalizes plans. A joint meeting at 7 30 p m in the High School Little Theatre is set with broad local support and a partial donor list noted in this week’s Tribune.
San Marino Republican women meet Tuesday March 27 at the Women’s Club to hear Dr. James G. Law speak on Propaganda the Vehicle for Infiltration and Subversion. The program includes a legislation report, intro by Mrs. H Audell Dixon and refreshments. donation 50 cents.

The Alhambra Planning Commission requested a variance to build an apartment at Granada and Huntington Drive near West San Marino in the city of Alhambra.
The San Marino City Council initiates steps for a 50th anniversary, aiming for a 1963 golden celebration. Mayor Harry W Hitchock proposes forming an anniversary committee and selecting a chairman and members, including veterans, club reps, and younger volunteers for active planning.
Deputy registrars in the community will help register voters for the June primary. Absentee ballots require contact with precinct captains or Mrs Sherm Telleen. Deadline to register is April 12. A list of registrars by precinct is provided with multiple names and addresses.
Rudy Zogerts pleaded not guilty to charges by the San Marino Police Department for exhibiting and selling obscene literature. He entered the plea at Pasadena Municipal Court on Tuesday. A trial date was set for April 30 and parts of the seized property were ordered returned.
D Lee Narver of Oakwood Drive is named Man of the Year in Industry by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce at the 27th Gridiron Banquet at the Palladium. As chairman of Holmes and Narver, he leads a firm credited for defense projects including Okinawa and Eniwetok site development and collaboration with the Atomic Energy Commission.
The San Marino City Council discussed a Tournament of Roses float at its last meeting. They reviewed funding tied to the citys 50th anniversary to be celebrated in 1983. A further study of a possible float in next years parade was directed.
San Marino Garden Club’s Spring Flower Show at Huntington School gym drew many visitors from the San Gabriel valley. Sweepstakes prizes went to Mrs. Elmer Howlett in Class A Arrangements and to several winners in Class B and Specimens. Blue Ribbon recipients included Mrs. Howlett, H E Dostr, L W Grsham, M L Banders and others.
Knox Mellon Jr history professor and 24th District candidate plans to run in the Democratic primary and challenge Republican incumbent Glen Lipscomb in November. He attended Huntington School and served in World War I. a Pomona and Claremont graduate, he teaches history at Immaculate Heart College.
Lt Page Moore of the San attends a Juvenile Officer Conference in Fresno this week. He will remain in Fresno through Friday March 23 and return on Saturday.
