San Marino High School held its annual speech and debate showcase featuring two dozen students. Notable performances included Jonathan Sheu’s extemporaneous debate, Karyn Chang’s Comedy Central style expository speech, Angela Bai’s “It’s Simple,” and a dramatic skit by Melan Rostamian. Keynote Matt Spence, a 1996 alumnus and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle Eastern Policy, spoke of using high school skills in arguing, examining evidence, and considering viewpoints during a moment with President Obama about the Osama bin Laden mission.

Robbery Suspect Chased Onto SMHS Campus Sunday Morning
Police chased an armed robbery suspect from a Alhambra 7 11 to San Marino High School where he was taken into custody after shots were fired. The suspect was arrested at 6 30 a m and booked on robbery and possession of prescription painkillers. He was arraigned yesterday. The incident began with a midnight robbery at a local 7 11 and continued as law enforcement from several agencies pursued the suspect through Huntington Drive toward the high school. One shot was fired in front of the high school and another during the pursuit.
