Friday May 2 is the date set for the annual Guild Day sponsored by the San Marino Woman's Club. The event marks the club year high point with booths from each guild and a push toward a new clubhouse as past years forged progress.
Homer C. Fetty, vocational director for Los Angeles County Schools, outlines a defense program focus on training workers for indust rial plants. He notes aircraft and shipbuilding labor markets are tight, LA County trains 500 classes for defense, and the region absorbs a large share of federal defense funds. Roy Simpson reports on a conference urging continued education funding.
The Stoneman Parent-Teacher Association schedules its annual Father’s Night dinner for Monday at 6:30 in the school cafeteria. Reservations are advised and tickets are sold by room mother committee. contact Mrs. R G McKay or Mrs. Richard Campbell for details. Guests include the San Marino School Board members and spouses. Mrs. Wilbur Thomas heads the décor committee.
San Marino plans an emergency mobilization of its four Scout troops within forty days. The signal will air on two radio networks, likely Friday or Saturday at 6 pm, with Huntington School grounds as the rally point. Police coordination and semaphore signaling will support the exercise led by Richard Crowshey and Burnell DeVos.
At a Friday assembly the South Pasadena San Marino High School basketball squads received athletic letters. Dan J. McCarthy of the American Legion presented a bronze trophy to the C team basketeers for winning the San Gabriel Valley League title.
J Buford Wright will speak on Recreation in Los Angeles County at the San Marino Rotary Club meeting today noon at the Huntington Hotel. Wright, a charter member and county parks and recreation centers supervisor, oversees county pleasure spots. E Conde Jones, recently back from Paris, described life under Nazi occupation after fleeing France and Portugal, prompting a long Q&A session.
In San Marino at 2299 Ashbourne Drive a possum startled Mr. J. H. Hahne at 7:30 AM Friday. He tried to capture it, then bound the animal to a fence after it played dead. The possum died Sunday morning and was buried, reflecting the Hahne family’s surprise at local wildlife.
More than a hundred scholars and writers from across the United States studied at the Huntington Library during the past year. Many visitors also spent brief stays to gather material or verify points, with families accompanying and sometimes settling for six months or longer in Southern California. Approximately sixty faculty members from various colleges and universities spent three months of their summer academic vacations there.
Elections held at Huntington Primary School last week named Hope Smith student body president. Other officers include Richard Stellar chief justice Jean Arnett vice president Mary Burnett recording secretary Ann Douglas corresponding secretary David Bruck sergeant at arms and Grant Kenyon publicity.
Members of the William L. Valentine Parent-Teacher Association praised Miss Beatrice Anderson for her talk on posture and child health. Mrs. Hanson was honored with the first Life Membership for distinguished service to the San Marino City Schools.
Ron Stever was re elected president of the Pasadena Community Chest at a recent meeting. Board members include Leon W Delbridge Mrs Pardee Erdman rs McClarty Harbison and Elizabeth Urmston Brown with Delbridge named vice president and Edward C Harwood added to the board. Stever said the 1941 campaign is a few thousand dollars from its goal and the campaign cost is about 2 percent.
Dr. Constantine Panunzio warned of civil war if Fascism fails to yield to the people as he spoke to the San Marino City Club at Joys Inn. Chief Glenn McClung reviewed San Marino police history, radio cars and burglaries in 1940, urging resident cooperation and recalling the late Arthur Morse.
San Marino Cub Scouts Pack 1 holds its second annual dinner at Huntington School gym at 6 30 p m on Tuesday March 25. Reservations via Den mothers by March 21. Mrs A J Gillette chairs a birthday event highlighting one year of Cubbing.
The third San Marino Junior Town Hall opens at 3:30 pm in the Huntington School Auditorium with Miro Ong Brown presenting wood carving history and methods. She also discusses related crafts, her training, and teaching venues including Balboa and Pasadena studios. Awards from the last program on chamber music will be presented by Mrs. L. T. Bradford to local students.
Five San Marino youths were inducted Friday and Monday in the fourth selective service call. Three volunteers from Boards 205 and 207 joined, including John Hart Yoshio Aoi and Willard Hovey Jr. Milton Cheverton enlisted in the Naval Aviation Reserve and will begin training April 15. Gale Westerdoll, home on leave, praised the draftees during a San Marino homecoming.
A general committee formed by the Inter-Club council outlines five memorials to honor five city school employees who died in May 1940. George C. Bush will have a formal garden at the high school. John E. Alman Fund will add $500 to the student loan program. Verner V. Vanderlip will receive a technical books library. An art piece will adorn the junior high in tribute.
