Coloratura soprano Thorn Mathiason will perform on the Easter Program of the San Marino Women's Club on Wednesday March 20. The event showcases a recital by a local artist for the club's seasonal program.
William Folger, flower arrangement teacher, spoke at the San Marino Garden Club about using color to connect garden beauty with interior decor. He advised selecting one dominant color, flower, or texture for cohesive home arrangements and noted his practical teaching approach.
Several accidents over the past week caused minor or substantial damage but no injuries. Dr Effie Kester of Alhambra hit Mae Michelson of Los Angeles on Huntington Drive at Atlantic. Sylvia Horgan backed into James Laney on Los Robles. A Transit Mix truck collided with Marie P Jones on Huntington Drive San Gabriel Boulevard, and an American Express Agency truck struck H J Cook, with damage noted as slight.
H Stanley Bent filed a nominating petition Saturday to seek re election as councilman making all city offices appear likely to be uncontested as filing closes Candidates for reelection include H Stanley Bent Carleton Tibbetts and H Lacy for the council E Randall Kerr for city clerk and Frederick Dickey for city treasurer The petition was signed by Carleton Tibbetts C O Cornwell John T Whitmore Evelyn Whitmore Gertrude Fleming John A Barton George Jacobs Sibyl Ivey Martin I Scott W E Cooper Carson W Ide and Edward R Kerr
The S M City Club will host a March 19 meeting at 6 30 p m in Huntington School cafeteria designated Boy Scout Night. L E Shepard chairs with Philip Gresham and others assisting. The program includes a Court of Honor led by local executives and troop head A T Pearson, merit awards, followed by a marimba band under Mrs Corydon Smith.
The San Marino Rotary Club hosts a luncheon at the Huntington Hotel on March 14 with Thomas Hammond delivering an illustrated talk titled Money. He will pose questions about currency and value and discuss concerns about the monetary system and gold reserves. Inter-club exchange with South Pasadena and Alhambra Rotary adds to the event’s activity.
Schools announce a week off for Easter. Students plan trips to beaches or mountains while hoping for warm mild spring weather during their freedom from classes.
The Huntington Art Gallery received two large 18th century Chippendale mirrors donated in memory of Henry Wheeler, first president of the Friends of the Huntington Library. Presented by Homer Crotty, the mirrors echo French rococo influence and stand six feet four inches high and two feet five inches wide, carved pine with gold leaf patina. They will hang near the gallery entrance, enriching the English furniture collection.
Mrs. E. H. Morrissey announces a plant sale on April 20 and 21 to raise funds for planting along the Pacific Electric right of way Huntington Drive from Granada to San Gabriel Boulevard. Garden club members are urged to contribute extra plants and arrange entries for the show.
The Stoneman P.T.A. held its March meeting in the kindergarten room with a flag salute led by Don Kruse. Mrs. W P Weirick presided as Mrs. W M Houghton summarized her year as radio and motion picture chair. Mrs. James Chess announced a child opera The Bumble bee Prince by Rimsky Korsakoff on March 20 at 10 a.m. at the Pantages Theatre Hollywood. Mrs. Joseph R. Jones invited San Marino mothers of pre school children to join the Huntington School group on Tuesday mornings. Mrs. Fred Perry spoke on birds noting their value to California economically and aesthetically and how children gain from observing birds, showing colored slides. Cub Scout Dens attended to hear the highlights of the discussion. Donald Watson demonstrated bird calls as slides were shown. A tea and social hour closed the event.
Building totals for residences reach assist by week with meth figures showing 65 500 plus 8 120 in addition permits totaling 73 620, doubling last week’s 35 525. Pardee Erdman earned the largest permit for a California-Georgian home on three acres with 40 000 to cover framing first. interior work will need another permit. Architect Ro land E Coate of San Marino leads design and Latisteel Corp. to be contractor. a second large home received a 17 000 permit.
Three musicians will perform today at 3 30 in Huntington School auditorium on a Junior Town Hall program. Helen Wig of Elgin harpist the picker and Eliza beth Morgridge Mills violinist with Harlow John Mills at the piano will present a chamber music program and explain instrument mechanics to a youthful audience.
Huntington P T A fathers group rehearses for the annual Father’s Night High Jinks at Huntington School auditorium tonight. Oscar Rasbach Joe Owen wrote the script and Spike Kenyon serves as impresario. Fathers interested in participating advised to attend.
Police report burglars entered Stoneman School on Wednesday night of last week and escaped with a small sum of money and a stop watch. Entries show signs of tampering on doors and windows, suggesting the theft occurred earlier in the week.
The council approved revised zoning maps and a public hearing for March 27 on the city planning changes. Jack Roush retires as street foreman, replaced by Paul Barton with a $190 monthly salary. Final approval given Huntington Land and Improvement Co. tract No. 11330 with a $50,000 bond for utilities. Public hearing on Shakespeare drive improvement set for April 10. Also two franchise payments accepted from Edison and California Water and Telephone. Library reports 14,426 books and 3,873 patrons. Humane Society handled 33 dogs and 11 cats in February. Street light maintenance cost $972.78, down from February 1939 windstorm impact.
In the Huntington School executive office, Mrs. Jane Crosby replaces Miss Peggy Houghton who left March 1 to marry soon. Crosby, a 1937 South Pasadena San Marino High School graduate, lives at 1930 Lemon Avenue St. Pasadena and previously worked for the South Pasadena Board of Education. Houghton had served as stenographer since October 1, 1938 and is daughter of the W Eg Houghtons of 1840 Old Mill Road.
Announcement this week names Jerry Voorhis recommended for West Point and Annapolis. Robert F Stanton, son of Robert H Stanton of 654 Plymouth, named as a second alternate for Annapolis.
