The 22 year old Downie Muir returns to Chaucer road after a year and a half roaming the world. He worked as a movie extra in Japan and sold cod liver oil in Malaya while avoiding ships due to union rules. He travelled mostly by hitchhiking or on foot, slept in homes and temples, and ate frugal meals in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Hermosa Beach Man Arraigned in Kidnapping and Robbery
Patrick Smythe of Hermosa Beach is arraigned on two kidnapping counts and one robbery count. He will face Pasadena Municipal Court at a preliminary hearing this Saturday for the abduction of Mrs. William Baxter and her daughter last week. San Marino Planning Commission approved a tract map to subdivide the Valentine estate on El Molino avenue into 14 lots. Demolition of the house will begin soon. The site is bounded by El Molino Wilson Winthrop and Los Robles avenues. Recommendations call for 15 and 20 foot side yards and an ornamental wall on two lots. The city and developer will retain trees along Winthrop and El Molino.

Superintendent Walter Dingus outlined tentative uses for a 45 cent tax override and a 350000 dollar bond package. Bonds would add about six cents over 20 years for classroom construction and renovations at Huntington Valentine and Stoneman, playground and ventilation upgrades, and modernization of facilities.
