The Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday night to implement the 1971-72 budget cuts, terminating employment for two high school staff members. The action follows the approved fiscal plan and targets positions within the district's high schools.
A memorial service for Allan Nevins former Huntington Library senior research associate is scheduled for Friday at 4 p m at Throop Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena Nevins died last week in Menlo Park after a long illness He authored or edited about 150 books and helped found the American Heritage magazine and the Oral History Program Survivors include wife Mary two daughters and six grandchildren The notice also covers district budget cuts from San Marino schools including staff reductions and potential tax override discussions.
Mayor Ted Burnett made the first personal donation to the Advanced Gift drive for San Marino’s 1972 Tournament of Roses float. The donation was acknowledged by Mrs. John G. Sundbye II, with Alfred Post urging further private gifts to fund design and construction for the float.

John Campbell of San Marino finished second in the 1971 Amer ican Legion oratorical state finals held in Merced. He was the highest placing San Marino High student to date, losing to an Orange County speaker who advances to the national finals for a chance at an $8 000 scholarship. San Marino American Legion Post 239 sponsored John and Post Adjutant Harold Erdman praised the achievement.
The 1970 census puts San Marino at 14 171 residents, up 519 from 1960. The city shows 14 068 whites, 24 Negroes, 85 others, with 7 489 females and 6 688 males. Housing values exceed 50 000 for 2 400 dwellings. 4 830 units house residents with rents from under 40 to over 200.
The San Marino Chamber of Commerce urges business members and residents to burn lights during darkness to deter burglars. It notes well lit offices or homes help police spot intruders and that a light left burning is the cheapest form of insurance against thieves.
The San Marino High Key Club hosts a cartoon film festival this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Featured characters include Road Runner Elmer Fudd Bugs Bunny and Sylvester among others.
Congressman John H. Rousselot of the 24th District will speak at the San Marino City Club dinner in the Huntington School cafeteria. A California native, he attended local schools and Principia College,Elsah IL, majoring in political science and business administration. He ran a public relations firm and worked in marketing systems and mergers, and led public information for the Federal Housing Administration. Huntington Girls' Glee Club will provide musical entertainment.
San Marino High School baseball, 7-1 on the season, won three games in one day to claim the La Canada tournament title. They beat Glendale 8-5 and 1-0, and Canyon 14-0, with strong pitching by Jeff Tuck and Bill Roose, and key hits from Jeff Wilson Tracy Totten Rich McDonald and George Santoro. Shepherdson was named MVP of the all tournament team, with Totten and Don Ebright also selected as outfielder and first baseman.
KMPC Airwatch pilot-reporter Jim Hicklin will be guest speaker at the San Marino Rotary Club lunch. He will discuss experiences reporting news and traffic from helicopters and twin-engine planes over Southern California.
Fire department logs show multiple responses to address electrical and vehicle fires. Entries list locations including Sherwood road Huntington drive Woodlawn avenue Van Dyke road Charlton road Bedford road and Sharon place with incidents such as circuit box furnace motor and vehicle fire and one false alarm. An ambulance was dispatched to Charlton road and Sharon place on separate dates.
David A. Latham named local crusade chairman for San Marino as the American Cancer Society launches its April fundraising drive. Latham is Huntington Drive resident, Security Pacific Bank manager, and current San Marino Chamber of Commerce president. He also serves on multiple local boards and is active in the Rotary Club. The central committee includes Roy Riggins and Mrs. Ernest L. Messner, with a long list of appointed members.
The San Marino school board candidate Henry B. Wilder kicked off his campaign with a Sunday afternoon event at his Afton road home. An audience heard Wilder outline his qualifications and priorities before a Q and A session. Future coffees will follow at local homes including Andrew Dunlap's and the Compton residence on Rosalind road. David McCarthy was named to the election committee as personnel coordinator, assisted by San Marino High student John Campbell, a regional American Legion oratorical finalist.
The San Marino High Faculty basketball team will host the Los Angeles Rams next Wednesday at 8 p.m. Tickets at the door are 1.50 for students and 2 for adults with advance sales 50 cents cheaper. Lat Termen led the last game with 47 42 and Pat Ryan and Jack Rankin headline the faculty lineup while Dirty Dan Mooney aims to improve after foul trouble.
The Friends of the San Marino Public Library announce a May 8 Book and Art Fair on library grounds with a Twenties theme. Dr Kenneth Veronda invites residents to donate books or bric-a-brac or arrange home pickup by calling 282-8484. Proceeds fund library amenities and ongoing services.
The San Marino High Faculty basketball team led by Pistol Pat R faces the Los Angeles Rams next Wednesday. Ryan, formerly of Hemet High, scored 17 points last week as the Faculty defeated the Senior Lettermen 47-42. Rumor about Pat with Pancho Villa denied.
John P. Pollock an Oak Grove avenue attorney was chosen as 1971 president of the Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The recognition dinner at the Hollywood Palladium noted Pollock succeeding Dr. Robert J. Downey.
