City council plans contingency measures as Jarvis Amendment would cap homeowners taxes at 1 of full market value. San Marino would drop from 2.13 million to 620 thousand yearly property tax, forcing a 51 drop in general fund revenue and a 5 reduction in expenditures, with payroll cuts leaving 42 staff.
City officials warn the Jarvis Amendment could trigger extensive staff cuts across departments. Police lose 1 officer and Fire loses 11, with Street and Parks trimmed by 10 and 12 respectively. Library drops to three staff, City Hall down to five, and ambulance and helicopter services may be eliminated. City Attorney Charles Martin calls the scenario preliminary and devastating to solvency.
Dispute over contract talks shows mutual accusations of bad faith. Teachers say impasse declared Feb 24 after six months of sessions with key issues like leaves class size grievance rules and salaries still unsettled. Board cites refusal to sign agreed sections and unwillingness to negotiate. PERB mediation sought to restart talks as both sides await further action.

Leishman of San Marino a long time Pasadena Tournament of Roses official has been named Grand Marshall for the 90th New Year’s Day festival The theme is Our Wonderful World of Sports and Leishman’s career includes roles from member to president and Rose Bowl football committee chairman He helped expand the Rose Bowl and brokered the Rose Bowl Pact with major conferences earning international honors including the 1974 Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award.
Last Tuesday the San Marino School Board set a deadline for applications to replace retiring president Walter Dingus. More than 100 applications have been received. The board will accept public input on traits and qualifications. A report from the Graduation Requirements Review Committee was presented by chairman Lawrence P Day, with questions from the board and audience. Formal action will come after review.
San Marino Community Players invite amateur theater buffs to a St Patrick’s Day gathering at the Stephens home on Friday March 17 at 8pm. Guests will hear an original one act comedy The Fabulous Mr Mike by Helen Ward and meet the cast and director as plans unfold for the May 18 19 20 main stage comedy The Man in the Dog Suit at Huntington School Auditorium.
Air ladies with sons in farm league should attend a scorekeeping clinic Friday March 16 at 9am at the San Marino Public Library Auditorium. The session lasts about 90 minutes and targets new Little League families. A makeup clinic is Tuesday March 21 at 7pm for majors minors and farm league members at the same library.
The US Weather Service forecasts variable cloudiness and fair temperatures from today through the weekend with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and overnight lows in the west.
