The City of San Marino earned two awards from the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers for the 1997 98 budget. In 1846 settlers at Sonoma proclaimed The Republic of California resisting Mexican threats. Mrs. John Sears donated a white cotton petticoat used for a flag with a red stripe. William Todd painted the grizzly bear emblem using lampblack and pokeberry juice on the fabric.
