Jim Gott, Greg Thyberg, Tom Gottschalk, Dr. Rob McKenna and others discuss baseball, law, engineering, computer science, banking, photography, journalism, surgery, stock brokerage and more. Students tour career talks and gain insight into professional life.

Six Candidates Vie For School Board Vacancy
The San Marino Board of Education will interview six candidates on Thursday March 5 at 5 p.m. to fill an open seat after Wendy Gute resigned last month. Candidates are John Bartos Peter Clinco Liz Giordano David McLean Greg Thyberg and Becky Ung. Gute's replacement is expected at the March 10 meeting. Bartos is a Special Assistant United States Attorney and has one child at San Marino High School. Clinco is an attorney with two San Marino schoolchildren and promises to improve board citizen relations. Giordano, PTA Council President, has four children connected to San Marino schools and pledges stronger city schools.

Ralph's Market near San Marino is expected to shut as early as July due to a merger with Hughes markets. The Compton based real estate head Ann Swiller said the six to nine month closing will lead to a sale to a competing grocer, while Fred Meyer buys Food4Less which owns Ralphs. Two S.M. Schools Advance to Science Olympiad Finals
In the largest Science Olympiad, Huntington Middle School placed second in the Los Angeles middle division and San Marino High School was fourth in the senior high division at Downey High on Feb 28. Both teams earned spots in the state finals at Cal State Long Beach on April 11. the top division winner goes to nationals in Grand Rapids, Michigan in May. Huntington’s eighth, ninth and seventh graders, plus alternates, competed alongside San Marino seniors and juniors including multiple sibling pairs.

Opera Visits Carver Valentine Elementary Schools
LA Opera singers performed for fourth and fifth graders at Carver and for second grade and a kindergartner class at Valentine. Jane Blake Hill and Jane Villanueva assisted on piano with Dan Eston. Selections included The Marriage of Figaro Pirates of Penzance and Mystery on the Docks. Students shared what they learned after the visit.

Pasadena City Council approved Forest City Development plans for a three level parking garage top theater, Gelsons supermarket, upscale shops on Lake Avenue near Macy’s. Online Collaboration Sparks Women’s History Exhibit at SMUSD
San Marino Unified School District students and Huntington Library staff collaborate on the first online exhibit Votes for Women marking the 50th anniversary of the suffrage movement. Forty two SMUSD students from grades six through 12 contributed to the virtual exhibit, creating graphics and text while middle school students built an online archive of lesson plans and supplementary materials. The exhibit premiered online and reflects a past Huntington display first mounted in October 1995 with curator Karen Kearns and UCLA historian Ellen DuBois, later touring California libraries in 1997. The project began as a six week summer program in 1997 and extended into the fall/winter term, supported by Helen and Peter Bing.

Little Shop Box Office Opens at San Marino High
The box office in the Neher Auditorium lobby will open Monday March 9 and run Monday to Friday from noon to 2 pm for three weeks plus 45 minutes before each show. Mail orders continue with forms at SMHS district office and PTA flyers. Shows run March 19 to 22 and March 26 to 29 at 8 pm, with two Sunday matinees at 2 pm.

Dysfunct President To Speak At San Marino Luncheon
