San Marino Police outline a city wide campaign to enforce traffic laws for bicycles. Officers will issue citations and warning slips for infractions such as riding wrong way, through pedestrian lanes, riding double, or at night without lights.
San Marino Rotarians formally demoted their president Dr Monroe Loy during a formal dinner dance. New president Hal Loynd, general manager of San Marino Motors, was installed. John Clay and Paul Cunningham oversaw the demotion. A joint session of outgoing and incoming boards was announced for Monday June 27 at the Holiday restaurant.
Two San Marino girls were injured in a collision at La France and Maple in South Pasadena. Betty Joyce Maginnis of Windsor Road drove a car struck by Paul J. Hoon 24 of Monrovia. Cynthia Peterson and Betty Harper were hospitalized with pelvic injuries. Harper is the superintendent’s daughter.
A proposed plan for the city owned lot east of City Hall would switch to a in and out operation. Current design accepts cars from Ington drive with exit via the alley to Roanoke road. The plan adds a west entrance and a Roanoke bound exit to ease resident traffic. A report will be given to Council at the next meeting.

San Marino received a National Safety Council citation for 1954 as one of five area cities without a traffic fatality within municipal limits. The city reported two and a half years without a fatality, until a May 1955 Mission district death ended the run. O A Smith, ex San Marino resident and former Pacific Electric Railway president, was honored for 16 years on the Safety Council board. he now lives in Corona Del Mar. Other cities cited were Bell Claremont El Segundo and El Monte.
Nearly 700 San Marino youngsters registered for swimming at the new community pool per recreation superintendent Howard Hites. About 259 will take the first session from June 20 to July 1, while 41 registered for the final session were unassigned and will join later. Five qualified water safety instructors assist, with eight pupils per instructor.
Shirley M. Hall of this city entered four works in the First Florida International Salon of Photography at Silver Springs Florida. One exhibit titled Old Nuremburg was designated as an honor print.
City Club Cubs win the league title with a 10 to 5 victory over the City Club Lions in the Saturday game. Chuck Todd and Ty Walker both homer while Todd fans nine. Todd leads batting with .625 and Rose is .581. Schedule for last week includes Dads, PTA Fathers, City Employees, Kiwanis, and closing night banquet next Wednesday.
San Marinos launch a ten week summer program starting Monday June 27 at local playgrounds. A two day Recreation Leaders Workshop will train staff for activities including teenagers teens at San Marino High and neighborhood outings. Highlights include a summer operetta rehearsals at San Marino High Little Theater and the City Junior Tennis Championships July 11 to 16 co sponsored by the Recreation Department and the San Marino Kiwanis Club leading to the U S National Public Parks and Playground Junior Tennis Championships in Arcadia August 15 to 20.
The San Marino Foundation barbecue on a sunny Saturday served 3402 meals, topping the 1954 attendance record. Neil Thackaberry led a new serving method with fast lines, an emergency stand opened at 6:15, and food prep by the San Marino Masonic Lodge. Clyde Lanehart supervised shaded seating at Huntington school grounds, with Eastern Star, Job's Daughters, and DeMolay providing cake, pies, and drinks.
Requiem Mass for Mrs. John J. Helen Troy of this city will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St Philip's church. She died June 21 at her home on Virginia road. A native of Lancaster Wisconsin she is survived by Storrow Troy of Illinois a brother Delos Abrams of San Gabriel and John Philip Troy.
Funeral services for former San Marino Police Sergeant Thomas Frank Stewart will be held in Pasadena at 1 30 p m Saturday. Stewart retired in 1954 after joining the San Marino force in 1934 and lived in Pasadena 35 years. he was born in Los Angeles and was a member of Cahuenga Lodge No 513 F and A M. He is survived by his wife Irene and his mother Mrs Rita K Stewart, both of Pasadena.
San Marino allows four foot fences for swimming pools. Building Inspector Sophus J. Press cites 393 pools needing fencing to guard toddlers. The change cuts the former minimum of five feet and aligns with nearby cities. Legislation might mandate four feet. Most pools would meet the new rule, with only about thirty failing.
Preston Hotchkis steps down as United States Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council after fifteen months in the role. Rumors in local circles name potential successors, including former Senator Homer Ferguson, with the $17,000 annual salary and duties highlighted. Hotchkis expects further administrative or mission service and cites private business obligations.
Arcadia seeking $2,000,000 hospital financed by sale of Los Angeles Methodist assets. Walter R. John Ruth of Lorain road will join the forum committee at a Pacific section American Association of Petroleum Geologists meeting. The forum session is set for 7 p.m. Monday June 20 in the General Petroleum auditorium in Los Angeles.
Street superintendent Paul Barton completed an eight week course on human relations management taught by Theodore P. Morris, Pasadena City personnel director.
H Leslie Hoffman of this city was chosen president of the board of directors of the Radio Electronics Television Manufacturers Association in Chicago. He is president of the Hoffman Electronics Corporation in Los Angeles.
Parked car on Huntington Drive halted a drunken driving incident in San Marino Friday. Patrolman Ira McKay spotted a weaving vehicle traveling east on Huntington at 2 pm on June 10 and pursued, but the driver crashed into a parked car at 2428 H Drive in GH before arrest. Driver named Pruning of Arcadia faces drunken driving charges.
