Smothers Rescues British Pilot From Korean Waters
Lt. Robert Smothers, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Smothers, aided by an SA16 amphibious rescue plane, saved Lt. James A. Ryan after Ryan parachuted into the sea off Korea's west coast. Smothers dove twice, towed Ryan 25 yards to safety, and later served in World War II before volunteering for Korea in 1950.
