Acting Chief A. P. Hughes of the San Marino fire department announces a spring clean up with a six point program to cut fire hazards citywide. A fire prevention crew will inspect properties including homes garages sheds stores and yards and burning is allowed 6 to 10 a.m on wind free days with precautions.
A neighbor recalls the burden of some conversations and defines tolerance as the ability to accept others beliefs without anger. The City Planning Commission approved a 15 foot high fence to enclose the high school property along Robles avenue. The Board of Education presented the petition after agreeing with nearby residents. The fence will stand 16 feet back from the curb with trees along the line.

County School Superintendent C. C. Trillingham received a lapel pin map of Los Angeles County from the Board of Supervisors. The recognition marked his twenty years in county service since his 1934 appointment as assistant superintendent and his 1942 rise to superintendent.
The city vote tallies show Knight winning both Republican and Democratic nominations with 62 percent turnout and 5425 total votes. Kuchel placed second in both parties, matching strong showings for Brown and Hillings in state races and a landslide ok for a new juvenile hall bond.
San Marino's Community Council voted to cover a 5300 deficit for the high school pool on a bid of 70000, hoping the project can proceed before next week's expiration. The council may seek repayment from the city and previously donated 17850 toward the pool with total gifts near 22800.
The San Marino Pharmacy at 2575 Mission Street was burgled early Monday with narcotics valued over 100 dollars and 7.76 dollars in cash stolen. Owner Frank Desseu found pry marks on the front door and the narcotics cabinet. Narcotics were recovered early Tuesday in South Los Angeles but the burglar was not found.
James E. Martin of 2355 Melville Drive Los Angeles area who died Tuesday in his home will have final rites conducted by Rev. Bertrand R. Crist tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Turner Stevens Chapel Alhambra. A Needles California native, he lived in San Marino 14 years and was a Missouri Law School graduate who served as a lieutenant in both World Wars. He practiced law in Los Angeles before the war and later served as general counsel for Mission Indemnity of Pasadena. Surviving are his wife Florence and two daughters Joan Menning Covina and Barbara Stasand Corona, his mother L. Martin Pasadena, sister Mrs Irving Leigh and three grandchildren.
The Library Board asked the Community Council for a $500 appropriation to buy a moving picture projector for the city library. A motion to grant the gift failed for want of a second.
Rollin Eckis, chief geologist for Richfield Oil Corporation, is named manager of exploration succeeding Frank A. Morgan. He resides at 848 Winston Avenue, is a Pomona College graduate with an MS from Caltech, a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and a founder and former president of the Petroleum Club of Los Angeles.
The Board of Education approved a swimming pool project for the high school campus after confirmation the funds were available. Dakin Engineering will build the pool for 67,750 with a metal filter, as total costs reach 71,010 including architectural fees and preliminaries set to begin next week with completion hoped for in September.
Fred Calin of 2900 Somerset Place was unanimously chosen to fill the county purchasing agent position left vacant by the death of J. W. Hughes of San Gabriel. He began with the county in 1933 as a laborer at 55 cents an hour and has risen through the ranks to the current appointment. Nominated by Superintendent Burton W. Chace of Long Beach and seconded by Superintendent Herbert C. Legg of Downey.
Edward G. Rider of San Marino has been elected bank comptroller by Citizens National Trust and Savings Bank of Los Angeles board, succeeding E R Arner who retired May 31. Rider, USC graduate of 1934, joined the bank in 1952 and was named assistant comptroller in January.
John B. Norberg of 1872 West Drive was named first vice president and Robert S. Warner of 1370 St. Albans Road was named a vice president of the California Society of CPAs for 1954 55. Officers were elected at the annual meeting held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
Holland Mayor Rene Roell and his wife Mrs Roell arrived on a three month U S tour from Haamstede Zeeland to express thanks for relief supplies sent after the February 1953 Holland flood disaster. Haamstede, flooded by the North Sea, saw 1800 lives lost and more than 200 missing. The mayor, lifetime appointee of Queen Wilhelmina, spoke at the San Marino Kiwanis Club. The Roells stay with Dr and Mrs Leon Oettinger Jr in Los Angeles area.
The sixth week of San Marino Twilight Soft Ball League play saw the Wreckers and City Club Cards tied for wins in a row. Highlights include 17-0 City Club Cards win over Kiwanis with Terry Hailoran on the mound and Ty Walker’s three hit performance.
A blaze at 2163 Melville Drive caused about 6500 in damage to a garage belonging to Carl A Treed son. The fire about 6 20 Saturday evening left the structure a near total loss. Two cars inside and miscellaneous items were destroyed. Firefighters battled the flames. H Van Horn sustained a cut on his right hand. Cause suspected to be spontaneous ignition.
