Forty two state property owners presented a petition to the City Council at its regular meeting last night demanding removal of the real estate office at the southeast corner of Bradbury road and Huntington drive. The petition notes 90 percent of the property sold and zoning as residential.
The University School senior class dedicated a $100 gift to the Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles in memory of Kathy Fiscus. JoAnne Watson announced the donation at graduation, where 43 students earned degrees. Rev. T. Raymond Jones gave the commencement address urging honor service and reverence for God.
San Marino Kiwanis and San Gabriel Kiwanis held a round table gathering Tuesday noon. They will meet again Thursday at the Town House in San Gabriel with the San Gabriel club providing the program.
Early Sunday events at Huntington School drew a small crowd as 5 to 5:30 am trials and finals from 5:30 to 6 am entertained a sleepy audience. Readers are asked to submit names of winners. Cub Scouts held a graduation last week with fathers receiving diplomas, recognizing parental effort in San Marino.
A 23 month old, Jeffery Nelson, son of Mr and Mrs Franklin W Nelson of 2920 Kinghurst, suffered first and second degree burns after staying in a shower too long. He turned on the water with the wrong faucet and was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital by ambulance responders.
Mary Volk aged 10 suffered a pair of skinned knees after a city truck brushed her just north of the PE station on Huntington Street. Driver Richard Dorey told police he had pulled around a PE bus in low gear when Volk appeared in front of him. He stopped immediately and she declined medical care before being taken home by Officer Snyder.
The city announces a Circus Days recreation program across San Marino playgrounds for girls and boys this summer. Activities span 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a Children’s Circus finale and safety emphasized. kindergarten turnout is limited.
Funeral services were held at Highland Park Presbyterian Church for Glen C. Crandall who died after a brain hemorrhage in Highland Park. Survived by Lilly his widow a daughter Glenda and a son Donald Henry and three brothers. Crandall led Highland Park Chevrolet later owning it and forming a partnership and a GM dealer director. He promoted Soap Box Derby and held key civic roles including Highland Park Symphony Association Chamber of Commerce Boy Scouts Red Cross Kiwanis district leader and vocations committee chair.
The Western conference of the Republican party meets June 10 11 at the Biltmore Los Angeles with leaders from 11 Western states. Ezra Whitla of Idaho is general chairman McIntyre Faries of California is vice chair Hugh Scott RNC chairman will attend. A luncheon at noon June 10 sponsored by the Los Angeles County Republican Assembly invites the public.
The first city meet, held June 4 at Huntington School playground under Recreation Director V. Howard, featured 7th 8th and 9th graders with many records likely to stand for next year. Winners in sprints jumps and throws earned medals while many fathers aided the event in a successful community effort.
Regular session of the San Marino Business and Professional Association discussed plans for a general meeting to acquaint members and citizens with the group’s aims and accomplishments. A beauty and holiday ornament program for the city was outlined with cross organization cooperation noted. A Friday Coffee Club event at Joy's Inn was announced with Jim Bradford in charge. Insignia membership promotion and rising member numbers were reported as accepted. Pizzinat shot put results listed and a high school relay race was won in 2 minutes and 22 seconds by Wright Morley Van Pelt and Ronny Stewart.
The San Marino Garden Club transfers 500 to the City Council to continue Huntington drive beautification. The funds come from the Spring Flower Show plant sales and club dues, approved at the latest board meeting.
An interested San Marino group gathered at Huntington School for the first open meeting of the San Marino Community Players. President Mrs. Percy T. Ubil led the session with the executive board and vice president Harry Weber. Special guests Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hofman of Center Stage Playhouse, Long Beach, shared insights from their theatre careers.
South Pasadena San Marino High School honors seniors with major Yale and Princeton scholarships. Clark McConnell and Walter Hilliard receive top awards, Janet Leeds Bryn Mawr and Lorraine Thomas Panhellenic scholarships follow. USC and UC Berkeley awards noted. Graduation events run June 12 to 16 with baccalaureate, junior high and high school ceremonies featuring student-led programs.
More than 300 Friends of Huntington Library and guests gathered Monday afternoon as Trustees Millikan Munro Page and Hubble hosted. The main exhibit for public viewing was a 26 piece set of hand colored lithographs London As It Is dated 1842 by Thomas Shotter Boys, recently donated by the Friends. C H Collins Baker spoke on Boys life and works, with Dr Hubble presenting the speaker. W A Parish organized the exhibit in the library's print collection and wrote the labels.
Regular monthly meeting of the San Marino Camera Club was held Tuesday evening at the home of R. Harry Carson 1866 Euclid. Plans for summer and fall activities were discussed and a color film program was presented by John McDonald.
