Grad Night Traditions Continue With A Night at the Movies

San Marino High School seniors celebrate Grad Night with a long standing tradition of transforming two gyms into themed rooms for dining, dancing, and games. Volunteer designer Joel Schiller and artist in residence Pat Cannell lead parent volunteers since 1956. The ceiling raising, ongoing since 1972 thanks to Andrée Guiss, uses sky blue gauze sewn on a portable machine. Final event scheduled for Sunday June 6 at 2 p.m.

Huntington teacher proves music class is for all

Huntington Middle School music and band teacher Bill McDaniel turns the classroom into a hands on studio. He uses a computer connected synthesizer to let students record edit and playback their melodies up to 16 takes per section. More than 300 students now take his class. Principal Loren Kleinrock praises his dedication to giving students artistic understanding and a personal musical experience.

San Marino Mourns Public Works Director Jack Flynn

San Marino honors longtime city employee Jack Flynn who died of cancer at 67 after 40 years of service. He began as a truck driver earning 2.40 an hour and rose to public works director for five years. Funeral services were held. Memorials to the American Cancer Society are suggested.

Draft EIR on Almansor Street traffic diverters in Alhambra

Michael Brandman Associates released a draft environmental impact report on the Almansor Street Traffic Diversion Project. The study examines five alternatives including removing diverters, adding left turn lanes on Huntington Drive, and reconstructing medians, with safety and traffic impacts central to the analysis.

Police Respond to Burglaries On Mission Street

The Sun Marine Police Department reports two burglaries in May on Mission Street. A residential break in the 2400 block involved a forced side door, rooms ransacked, and electronics valued at 4650 dollars stolen. a home left unattended. A separate burglary in the 2500 block of Mission Street targeted a commercial site with a rear door forced open, stealing stereo equipment a pizza oven and kitchen appliances totaling 3400 dollars. No arrests have been made and no property recovered. Both cases are under investigation.

San Marino Titans Fall 4-3 in Semifinal to Yucaipa

The San Marino varsity baseball team lost 4-3 to Yucaipa in the semifinals, ending their season at 22-3 and winning the Rio Hondo League title. Yucaipa advances to the Anaheim stadium, while San Marino finishes with a strong campaign after last year’s semifinal defeat.
