Community Eighteen Attend San Marino Club Meeting
Eighteen members of the San Marino Community Council met Monday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Cornell to welcome new members Mrs. A. G. Wellek and Mrs. J. Buford Wright. Treasurers reported unpaid pledges 20.50 for 1938 and 240.25 for 1939, with audit results praising books kept by John A. Barton and a proposal to hire a CPA for a professional audit next year.

May building total rises in San Marino with $279 450 permit
San Marino's May building permits total reached 279450 as of press time. The week’s largest permit was for a twelve room two story Colonial at 1925 Lombardy road for M D Schatzman of 1858 East California street with H Roy Kelley as architect and Clarence Boenig contractor. Other permits include a six room two story Georgian at 1250 Lorain road for Thomas Hallinen with A Armstrong and Company as contractor, and a $6000 California home at 2530 Sycamore drive with E M Reel owner and contractor. Reel resides at 3543 Homeland drive Los Angeles.

A 19 year old named Richard Newton suffered a broken leg when his motorcycle collided broadside with a car driven by Knox Brewer near the Huntington Library main gate on Oxford Road. Newton was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital. Brewer and his passenger were uninjured. A separate Memorial Day crash at California and San Marino injured Mrs. Corliss Fairchild.

The Huntington School grounds host a P T A Circus next Saturday June 3 led by Bozo the Clown. Activities include pony rides games races a feature film and Walt Disney cartoon plus a circus luncheon and food booths. Proceeds support PTA activities with donations sought for the White Elephant Booth and magician in the PTA room.

Traffic Officer Struck By Car In Early Monday Chase
Traffic officer Ray Bahn was struck while pursuing a speeder on Huntington drive at 12:34 a.m. The crash occurred on Granada near Huntington. Passengers Dora Lopez Sally Sierra and De La Cruz Frank were treated for injuries at Alhambra Health Center. Bahn steered onto Pacific Electric tracks to avoid a collision, and the car stopped after 102 feet. Ayala received a traffic citation for four persons in a coupe.

The San Marino City Club hosted a dinner dance in the Hotel ballroom with decor, speeches beyond the dinner, and a varied act lineup. Eddie Stanley served as master of ceremonies while Modie and Lemaux performed dances, Dorothy Garrison sang, Edith Davis tapped, Debee and Hudson did comedy and xylophone, and Stanley added humor and juggling. Ladies Night, led by president W. B. McKesson and the board, framed the event.

Health Officer S J Stewart Dies After Ill Health
Dr S J Stewart district health officer for Alhambra Health Center died after four years of illness. Funeral services were held May 26 in Alhambra. He led health services for Alhambra San Marino San Gabriel Monterey Park and El Monte and area for over 15 years. Previously county health officer for Adams County Nebraska and served in World War I Medical Corps. He earned a Nebraska state medal for perfect attendance. He remained active in public health throughout his career.

Carter Yates of San Marino is among 41 interns finishing a nine month public affairs training in Washington at the National Institute of Public Affairs.
