A New Englander visiting the Tribune office recounts hitchhiking across the country to the Republican convention. He notes youth support for Barry Goldwater, saying about 88 percent favored him and that enthusiasm ran high among demonstrators observed during the trip.
Three robberies occurred in the San Marino business district last Tuesday night. The San Marino Travel Service Bob May's Hair Fashions and the San Marino Sporting Goods store were entered. A cash box at Bob May's was emptied and about $60 was taken from Sporting Goods. Travel Service reported no loss but the burglars went through the entire store. The Travel Service and Fashion Parlor are neighboring and were entered similarly.
Sheffield Wellesley Endicott children staged two backyard performances of Babes in Toyland raising 48 for Huntington Memorial Hospital Pediatric Ward. About 100 parents and neighbors watched 27 kids aged 4 to 14 perform in Gerald Canada’s garage with homemade props and costumes.
The 25 year old Bill Toomey dominated the pentathlon at Westbrook scoring 3687 points to break his own record and clinch his fourth AAU pentathlon title. He won broad jump 25 922 inches and javelin 193 feet while training as a US Olympic alternate.

A San Marino youth named Paul S. Stathatos, 10, was injured last Tuesday after a Huntington drive car struck his bicycle. He suffered leg and ankle injuries as the car driven by Monrovia resident Savas Staneene failed to stop.

City Manager Charles Martin cites a 108 thousand valuation decline and 41 thousand extra revenue, suggesting a 5.5 cent tax raise if council deletions pass. Police and firemen could see up to 11 percent raises. Department heads also seek pay raises.

The Marino House on Mission Street shuts its doors after 14 years in operation. Owner Leon Bares cites a decline in business and notes he has led the restaurant for 17 months. He says no immediate plans beyond rest, with limited time off recently.
The San Marino Unified School District adopts a five year general policy from United Pacific of Tacoma saving about 2100 annually. Premiums total around 8000 yearly and cover general liability reinsurance crime and earthquake for the high school pool. Board approval followed negotiations with the insurer and district, replacing prior coverage by A Paul Fire and Marine.
Public works announce completion of reconstruction on Sierra Madre boulevard and Santa Anita avenue, allowing normal traffic. The project cost 128209 dollars, about 1650 over the contract, due to unsuitable soil requiring extra base material per city engineer Milton Emerson.

The San Marino Kiwanis Club plans to plant 22 Indian Laurel trees along two blocks of Mission Street between El Molino and Euclid Avenues. Merchants and property owners will fund the trees, which the City of San Marino will plant and care for. trees stored at Lacy Park and set for planting in October. The effort, led by the Committee on Agriculture and Conservation, received 90 percent cooperative support from local merchants.
Bob Gross, a 1961 San Marino School graduate, played in the Southern California Golf Association amateur tour at San Gabriel Country Club last Sunday. The event was televised on KITV Channel 11 under a theme titled Flight.
