Incumbent Theodore Hoffman will not run for a San Marino Unified School District Board seat. Mary Snaer, a one term incumbent, and Selma Sax, a first time candidate, filed papers July 21 for two seats. Sax cited personal stakes and budgeting experience, while Snaer highlighted her education background.
Jane Hoffimian Popovich of Oak Grove Avenue has been named to the University of Southern California Board of Trustees becoming the first second generation trustee in USC history and one of five women on the board. Her father the late He Leslie Hoffman helped advance the master plan and served 17 years on the board, raising over 100 million dollars. Popovich says she will fulfill trustees duties without pressure and notes her USC BA in 1965 and ongoing work with Women of Troy and USC Associates in the San Gabriel Valley.
San Gabriel police say former San Marino resident Mark Christensen shot and killed Kenneth Morone and then killed himself after pursuing 21 year old Kenneth Morone and 19 year old Sherie Morone to a shoe store and in the 300 block of West Broadway. Sherie Morone remains hospitalized in stable condition with wounds to the stomach arm and head. Christensen died at a hospital early July 11. The ex couple had ended a lengthy relationship a little over a month ago.

San Marino High School cross country alumni gather for the ninth annual Alum Race at Lacy Park. The three mile course tests 1983 Coach Phil Ryan’s team against alumni, with CIF medalist David Baca and teammates expected to challenge. Race time is 6pm.
San Marino Police Chief James Moore says sirens will be tested Friday at 10 am and again on the last Friday of each remix period, as part of ongoing civil defense readiness.
In a district crime tally, arson figures as the largest factor, with a high school blaze causing three classrooms to be rebuilt. The year saw 78 crimes, 77 of which accounted for 5.92 in losses, vandalism and theft notable, windows damaged district wide, and fence tampering at San Marino High.
The San Marino City Council approved a 1983 84 budget with 103 million for police and fire, 21 percent under the voters allowance. The total budget is about 4.3 million, up 4 percent, with 254000 pulled from reserves for capital items including a fire truck 150000 a street sweeper 69500 and roof work at the public library 45000 plus a 10000 gift from Friends of the Library. The reserve fund approx 4 million rose by over 5000 during the year due to higher interest income and budget control. The council did not raise personnel costs nor decide on wage increases. Public works projects total 220000 include street resurfacing 155000 a traffic controller 25000 and a fluorescent street light program 60000. The budget transfers retirement charges to departmental accounts to meet state reports and the council expects to remove recreation department expenses next year with fees to cover costs, though director Joan Garrett warned fee hikes could reduce participation.
City Manager Allen Stephenson said a city must continually move forward or risk decline at a San Marino Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He outlined his philosophy of efficient, effective city government and prudent expenditure since taking over on July 1.
Members of the San Marin Fire Department request forming an employees association and joining the California League of City Employers Associations Inc CLOCEA. Firefighter Rick Wiesemann cites job security, pay, and benefits as key reasons. They seek clear layoff policies and better city hall communications after layoff incidents and a Measure No. a police and fire protection assessment election controversy. The city manager and officials are to respond.
San Marino Recreation Department offers summer diversions for local youngsters with Adventurers Day Camp for first to third graders, Freewheelers bicycle safety for third to sixth graders, and day campers enjoying crafts and snacks. Red Cross safety instructors teach nearly 200 high school pool participants as sessions continue through summer.
