The Huntington drive signalization may be discussed next week after a City Council adjournment. Mayor Ide canceled this week’s session to defer to County Sanitation District officials.
The piece surveys critiques of government management advocates and dividend ideas, notes Nixon's anti communist fame contrasted with tepid support, and references Washington funding to Asia. It mentions Mudville Tennessee renamed Pleasant View and quotes a judge on parental restraint and youth in court.
Harrington and Company of Pasadena buys the building at 2319 Huntington Drive from Samaljack Corporation. The new owner plans immediate alterations and will relocate its investment business to the Huntington Drive site as soon as changes are completed.
Funeral services for Charles Jahnke Sr. of Los Angeles father of Mrs Corrinne D Bergren of this city were held Wednesday in Alhambra. Jahnke died July 23. A Brooklyn native, he had lived in Los Angeles 11 years. Surviving are Mrs Bergren a brother Charles I Jahnke of Tampa Fla three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Gainsborough Palomar neighborhood carnival staged by San Marino youths raised 7.90 for the Community Chest. Led by Candy Jane Williams the event featured booths with helpers Bonnie Ginger Rickey Mittler Gwen Fisher and Mary Jane Parrine on Janis and Richard Carter's badminton court.
San Marino couple Kenneth and Mrs Hoke narrowly escaped death when a rain flood and mud avalanche struck a Mono Lake area motel. The hillside collapsed burying the motel gas station five cottages and ten cars with the Hokes stranded in the last unit until a hose helped them reach higher ground. The car and belongings were lost and the area remained blocked by floodwaters as rescue efforts continued.
City recreation officials and police sought the culprit after a dye was dumped into the new San Marino Swimming Pool turning the water deep green. Howard Hites coordinated with the health department to clear the color using chlorine and filtration while investigators continued the search.
The San Marino City Recreation Department will run a second summer trip to Disneyland led by Superintendent Howard Hites. The August 5 tour requires small buddy groups, limits rides for value, and includes bus fare admission and lunch with leaders and volunteers. Registration closes August 2. departure is 9 am and return by 5 pm.
Funeral services for Lt. (jg) Clark C. McConnell Jr. will be held Friday at Arlington National Cemetery after a carrier based Navy bomber crash near Naples Italy. McConnell a San Marino native and Yale alum was aboard the USS Coral Sea on a Mediterranean cruise and long served at Patuxent River NAS. He was educated at Huntington Elementary and SM-SPHS. He enlisted in 1953 and earned his commission at Newport and bomber navigator training in Florida. His family from Lorain Road traveled to Washington for the services and a city program honored veterans with service pins amid city events and a large employee pin presentation totaling 590 man-years.
San Marino city employees and their families, about 170 people, attended the annual City Employes Association picnic at Lacy Park. Joe Miller, president, reported that attendees enjoyed the event while discussions touched on fiscal matters and the general fund remaining unchanged.
Three San Marino High School players Brock Robertson Jim Connelly and Jim McDonald will star for the Pasadena All Stars against Arcadia in the Southern California Babe Ruth League championship at Wrigley Field this Saturday at 11 am. The winner advances to the state final at Gilmore Stadium August 6 and then to national playoffs in Austin Texas August 10.
Civil Defense survey in San Marino seeks to recruit all nurses. Mrs. Robert Hull supervises. registration cards were mailed to state registered nurses and must be returned. Nurses not contacted should call Mrs. Hull at Sycamore 2 8374.
Plans to convert the west parking lot into in and out parking were abandoned this week. Only change left under consideration is preventing traffic from exiting east, with all traffic exiting the lot to the south.
Ceramics by Malcolm McClain of San Marino and a Los Angeles County Art Institute student will be shown at the Los Angeles Art Association on Wilshire Boulevard from Monday August 1 to Friday August 5. Hours are 12 noon to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Police Chief Robert Seares announced the hiring of Mrs Iretta Potter as a policewoman and secretary for the city. Potter, formerly a secretary with the Pasadena Police Department, joins Sean Marino's force.
The San Marino Red Cross hosts a quarterly Blood Bank at the San Marino Woman's Club from 3 to 7 30 today. Over 25 women staff the event, with many donating blood. Additional volunteer openings announced for October.
