The San Marino War Salvage Committee collected twenty seven tons of old newspapers and magazines in a two day drive chaired by A H Skaer with help from Huntington boys and local residents. Proceeds benefit a community charity fund and future salvage drives are planned for the fall to aid food and other war needs.
County assessor John R. Quinn released figures for nine neighboring cities. San Marino reports an assessed valuation of 16 825 050 for the 1944 45 fiscal year. Other totals include Alhambra 29470945 Arcadia 11539985 El Monte 2904660 Monrovia 7121840 Monterey Park 4344270 San Gabriel 9174775 Sierra Madre 2689725 and South Pasadena 9937680.
Huntington school recreation clubs composed of boys from grades six to eight helped with a waste paper salvage drive by delivering announcements and assisting with loading papers onto collecting trucks. Names of participants include Cornell Gray Bob Arnett George Witter Peter Broadcasting Kenyon Dave Kenyon Don Scott and several others.
San Marin police chief Glenn F. McClung urged motorists to observe traffic laws including turning rules in block interiors and parking with red curbs. He emphasized uturns and diagonal parking limits and warned offenders would be held strictly responsible for violations.
A certificate to purchase a new car was granted to Charles W. Mulhals of San Marin an during a weekend rationing announcement. The permit appears linked to California street and the McSenate operation.
Glenn F. McClung, chief of police, announced to the city Council that two officers, William Davis and James Brennan, resigned July 1. Daryl Spear was named to Brennan's vacancy, leaving one more vacancy.
Mothers of girls at Camp Del Dia San Marino Girl Scout day camp are invited to a 11 30 a m luncheon on Thursday July 27 at Sherwood Grove. Units display crafts from July session and an assembly follows. Unit 3 presents Mollie Whuppie. Unit 1 hosts a self written radio quiz program. Camp Del Dia is directed by Mrs Eugene Coughlin.
County Health Officer H. O. Swartout urges vacationers to verify rabies quarantine rules before traveling with dogs. No dog from quarantined areas may be removed, and quarantined pets must stay confined for the duration of the area’s quarantine.
San Marino Garden club led by Mrs. D. W. Anderson collects weekly flower donations for the Pasadena army base Hospital. Red Cross Grey Ladies arrange and distribute blooms to chapel and recreation rooms. Members include Mrs. Hazeltine, Wilbur Thomas, C. S. Waitt, ZL. C. Miller, R. M. Allan, and F. L. Ryder. Donations can be arranged through Mrs. Adamson at Atlantic 2-1508.
San Marino's Company B of the 4th Battalion 29th Regiment California State Guard will train Sunday at Camp Santa Anita under Army Ninth Service Command supervision Maj. John S Staats battalion commander announced. Training covers disaster response roadblocks guard and sentry duty communications reconnaissance and first aid. Company B drills Mondays at Huntington School seeks new members Lt Clarence Williams commands and Lt Albert Purkiss is second in command.
Through its effects on gas tax receipts gasoline rationing has cut highway funding by about $50 000 a day the state board of equalization estimated May gasoline tax assessments were 4 154 032 compared with 5 623 773 in May 1942 before rationing May 1944 receipts were 49 644 under May 1943 the first time this year revenue lagged the prior May
San Marino PTA council urges the playground commission to keep tennis courts lighted every night near the San Marino Public Library and local schools. The group notes teen employment during the day and calls for access after hours while ensuring adult supervision and near noon hour library use for students.
San Marino Community Church and St Edmunds Episcopal Church will sponsor a vacation church school for children aged four to six. Dr P Martin Baker and Rev William Cowans planned it, with Rev Leonard Leiber Jones directing. Sessions run five days a week for two weeks starting Monday July 31 from 9 00 am to 11 30 am at the Grove arena on Huntington school premises.
New chairmen named for the GOP county central committee with Roy O. Dax of Pomona as 12th district leader and Charles F Hutchins of South Pasadena heading the 53rd assembly district. Vice chair Rosetta Breadwall, secretary Mabel Boardman, and treasurer A G Kruse also listed alongside district officers.
The Office of Price Administration announces that local rent offices may adjust maximum rents for housing or hotel accommodations based on peculiar circumstances. Examples include a renter wife with a deployed husband, disputed property titles with idle management, and short occupancy layoffs causing temporary high rates.
Southern California school children in public private and parochial schools funded 473 war planes and other equipment totaling 7.8 million dollars, part of a 20.6 million dollar war bond drive under the Schools-at-War program. The recap lists 404 training planes 75 thousand dollars each 14 C 47s 110 thousand each five B 25s 175 thousand each one B 24 Liberator 300 thousand and one B 17 450 thousand. About 80 million dollars in war bonds have been bought by students since November 1942.
At Wednesday noon meeting the county board heard a presentation from the citizens advisory committee on public assistance led by secretary Mrs. Jackson W. Chance of San Marino. The group proposed an alertness program to prevent postwar destitution among the needy and destitute.
Tournaments in ping-pong checkers badminton and caroms proceed at the San Marino Play School on Huntington grounds for the ninth year. Cornell Gray tops senior badminton and caroms titles, Bob Garrett keeps junior caroms title, while Jerry Addicott edges to junior caroms. Drama class stages Finders Keepers while The Ghostly Prince was shown last week.
Edith Kent Collins, current owner, notes the San Marino Tribune’s circulation rose tenfold since 1929 when she and the late Franklyn W. Collins bought the paper. Advertising and job printing revenue grew with subscriptions as the paper moved from Mission street rented rooms to 2655 Mission street and then to 2260 Huntington drive in the city hall area, with offices occupied in January 1936.
Police reported a single traffic accident in San Marino last week. C Vandercook of 90S San Gabriel boulevard said a large grey sedan, possibly a Buick, struck his car at Clarence and San Gabriel boulevard and fled. Four citations were issued for improper boulevard stops.
The Huntington Library opens a graphic arts show tracing four centuries of printmaking from woodcut and etching to lithography. About 100 pieces from masters like Holbein Durer Rembrandt Goya and Daumier are displayed with eighteen Rembrandt engravings lent by Dr Edward Bodan. The exhibit runs through August 31 before a two month renovation period.
The Office Price Administration announced a $2 per ton rise for seven salvage paper trades to boost collection efforts. The increase applies to No 1 mixed, No 1 news, overissue news, old corrugated containers, mill wrappers, mixed books, and No 1 envy books and magazines.
Pasadena-San Gabriel Valley Young Republican club elected William Micajah Martin of San Marino as president at a Sunday meeting in Pasadena. Officers named include W. Jack Grant as vice president, Mrs. Wallace D. Bassett as secretary, and Harold Garnsey as treasurer. The club, now 70 members, aims for 500 and heard Rep. Carl Hinsenkaw stress youth roles in the upcoming presidential campaign.
Gas rationing reduces funds for road work as San Marino servicemen and servicewomen await inclusion in a Memorial Day Honor Roll supplement. Submissions must include name rank branch of service and home address to qualify for the supplementary list.
Building inspector George H. Cronshey reports 13 permits granted in the first two weeks of July with a total construction valuation of $7,227.25. Four permits cover insulation, four cover walls or fences, and the rest repairs and alterations across nineteen listed properties including Gladys M Lang residence and J P Jackson screen porch enclosure.
The 1944 statewide State War Chest drive in California runs October 9 to November 11. Ralph T. Fisher announces the campaign will fund armed forces services United Nations relief agencies and home front welfare. About 1000 California communities will raise funds for USO War Prisoners Aid United Seamen's Service and many relief groups.

The OPA orders a nationwide shoe census for July 31 to aid policy on ration periods and stock releases. Retailers distributors jobbers and manufacturers must inventory rationed shoes and currency at close of business. This is the third industry-wide count since February 7 1943. In Southern California about 1750 retailers participate employing about 10 000 people said John Scott Black OPA rationing specialist.
