Protestants outlined a plan for a Community church in San Marino with a temporary location. A Sunday school and adult classes are planned while permits are pursued. A July 29 meeting at Mr. Wrights will discuss a large fall open meeting for interested residents. Contact Rev. Ralph Shanks for details.
The Library offers extended loan periods during vacation with books due upon return. Adults may borrow ten books, children six, with some restrictions such as seven day fiction or titles on hold. A cooperative program helps patrons keep their place on requested books while away.
A list of recent fiction titles appears, including Morning Shows the Day by Bolster and The Dark Stranger by Dodge among others. The compilation highlights new works and authors such as Garth, McCullers, Sietin, Witton, Livermore, and Daniels in a reading roundup.

San Marino residents face a surge of petty thefts concentrated in open garages over a week. Police Chief Glenn Sieeneee warns homeowners to secure vacant properties as items vanish from several garages including Ted Laveson 2315 Ridgeway Arthur Brett 990 Sherwood Road Frederick B Dickey 2680 Oak Knoll and the Conrad Troil 1400 Circle Drive and William Fox 2860 Lorain with no sign of forced entry in some cases.
Fire Chief Copley reported a second quarter 1940 fire loss of 160 dollars to the City Council. April to June saw 40 inspections and 70 complaints answered, with 20 fire calls—1 in dwellings, 1 in garages, 4 in grass, 14 miscellaneous. He credited community cooperation for the good record and urged continued vigilance against fire hazards.
Forest rangers issued warnings that this year’s fire hazard is unusually high across counties and brush areas. Visitors to mountains or brushland were urged to take precautions and avoid setting fires due to extreme dryness.
The Sports Guild announces weekly badminton on Monday evenings at Huntington gym with two courts available. All members of the Woman's Club are invited to participate as the group has recently begun using the school gym, with players including Mesdames Raffie Wardwell Lindsley Wright Sykes Mayo Squires Miller and Carr.

Dr and Mrs Ralph Atkinson arrived in San Marino Sunday ending a year touring the British Isles and Norway. Mr Atkinson said their long trip left them relieved to be back and ready to resume normal life.
The San Gabriel Valley Newswomen’s Association to host a charity gala at the Duarte ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Burton Fitts featuring Nico Charisse Roberta Hughes and Joe Sullivan with dancing swimming tennis and other diversions. Proceeds go to the British American Ambulance Corps via the British Red Cross. Reservations through Mrs. A. F. Heinze in San Marino. More than 200 San Marino property owners packed the Board of Supervisors chambers Tuesday to challenge assessments south of Huntington Drive. The board, by a 3 to 1 vote, denied the protests with Supervisor Jessup the sole supporter.
Summer hours at Huntington playground under Ray Bryce Walter Lipke and Miss Doris Williams feature daily programs 9 to 5 including badminton ping pong basketball and craft classes with a model airplane meet planned and a play by the drama class this late summer.
Col Wayne Allen of the 160th Infantry Los Angeles National Guard led defense maneuvers in the Pomona foothills. The exercise simulated stopping a mechanized attack on Los Angeles with anti aircraft and anti tank units defending the city.
San Marino Cub Scouts Pack No. 1 schedules a summer meeting for July 30 at 7 30 p m in Huntington School patio. Cubmaster Mr Jones says three dens will plan special events and invites all cubs parents and friends to attend with details to follow.
On a Tuesday last week Harry Lee Sherwood aged 21 left his home at 1926 Lorain road in yellow and brown, wandered toward the East, and was found by a search party at Lorain and San Marino avenue at 7 34 pm. He was returned to his grandmother Mrs Frienda Detrick.
