San Marino 5K Walk Honors J P Blecksmith Founder
The 3rd Annual San Marino Tribune 5K Walk & Run supported the J P Blecksmith Leadership Foundation. More than 500 entries filled forms and hundreds cheered as runners started at Monterey Road. The event honors J P Blecksmith, a San Marino native and Navy Marine Corps member who died in Fallujah. Katarina Mayers sang the National Anthem as Vice Mayor Bob Twist led the crowd, with safety oversight by San Marino police and fire chiefs.

City considers gym and facilities at San Marino Center
San Marino City Council began evaluating a new 17 260 sq ft gymnasium with meeting rooms stage and day care at the San Marino Center adjacent to the Crowell Public Library. Early cost estimates reach 8.8 million with a possible 1 million add on for a pool. City Manager Ballantyne said lead building may reduce delays from the state architect.

Bill Elftman Dies at 81 City Club President in 1973
George William Bill Elftman a 53 year San Marino resident and 48 year City Club member died Friday after a long cancer battle. He led the Old Mill advisory board and served on the Old Mill Foundation board, later becoming trustee emeritus in January.

Robbery Victim Disputes Police Account Of Attack
Mrs. Winifred Sampsell disputed San Marino Police claims about a June 29 robbery at her Gainsborough Drive home. She described attackers as 6'0" to 6'2" and 200 to 225 pounds, said she suffered a compressed spine, and questioned the police report stating she was not seriously injured. She has lived at the home 50 years. Police Chief Gary Isaacs expressed surprise at her dissatisfaction after a 30-minute talk.
