San Marino city’s total assessed value drops about $484,300 led by a $932,820 plunge in secured personal property. Improvements rise $280,830 while land and utilities shift slightly, with district totals near last year but school finances still hit by prior tax limits.
The San Marino Unified School District and the San Marino High School Stadium Committee announced the committee will purchase the bleachers and acquire the lease to rent them to the district. At $6400 yearly, rental funds aim to boost the committee treasury and support a long term plan toward a new stadium. The effort has already raised about $25,000 toward a projected under-$200,000 stadium cost.
Local readers complain that incoming mail carrying checks is slow while outgoing mail works well. A humorous quip notes the White House renovation has long been unused. A reader column jokes about taxation and sun exposure.
A new dormitory valued at 60000 is under construction on Veranda place near the Academy grounds and is expected ready for occupancy by September 12. Mrs. William A. Schaeffer and her 3 1/2 year old daughter were treated for burns at Huntington Memorial Hospital after grease spilled from a pan in their La Mirada Avenue home. Police said the incident occurred when the mother held a greased pan, causing light burns to both.
San Marino shows a mild 1963 build boom as the City Building Department reports 17 residential permits issued year to date. Projects include 500 homes at 1414 Wilson and estates by State Mutual Arcadia Investment Co at 325 Milta 315 Callita and 135 Garfield Avenue with values totaling 151 690.
Robert O Dougan of Huntington Library is named to the National Council of the Robinson Jeffers Committee of Occidental College. The panel aims to compile a major bibliography of Jeffers works. Jeffers, a leading American poet, died last year at 75 and graduated from Occidental at age 18.
Robert Emett of Winston Avenue elected president of the Claremont Men's College Alumni Association after serving as vice president and board member. A long-time San Marino resident, he heads Emett and Chandler, Pacific Coast’s leading insurance broker, and is a member of the College Track and Field Hall of Fame and the Young Presidents Organization.
City Hall reports Chief Thomas E. Almand back at his desk today resuming duties after a period away. Community officials welcomed his return as city operations continue.
The California Medical Association Scientific Board warns that direct sun viewing risks severe eye damage during the July 29 eclipse. It endorses a pinhole camera method using a white paper screen to project the sun’s image for safe viewing between 12:56 p.m. and 3:04 p.m.
San Marino planning panel postponed decision on a new subdivision at Old Mill Road and Monterey Road. Proposals to cut setbacks from 40 to 20 feet sparked strong opposition as residents urged two story alternatives while developers cited 3 000 square foot home size restricting architecture. The hearing will resume at the August meeting.
Janet S. Stanley daughter of Mrs Kathryn B Stanley of Fleur Drive is in fair condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital Pasadena with head injuries after a car accident last Tuesday. Eyewitnesses say she was thrown about 15 feet from her Volkswagen convertible which overturned at Avenue 60 off ramp of the Pasadena Freeway. She had just graduated San Marino High School and was attending Pasadena City College evenings.
The San Marino Board of Education will hold a regular meeting next Tuesday July 16 at 7 30 p m in the Administration Building 1665 West Drive Walter Dingus superintendent of schools said the session will cover standard agenda items.
Dr and Mrs W R Bob Irwin attended the 48th Kiwanis International convention at Convention Hall Atlantic City as representatives of the San Marino Kiwanis Club. He is a longtime member of the San Marino club.
A La Paz area resident Thomas J McEnnury purchased six Alhambra storefronts along 100 feet of North Garfield avenue paying under 100000. The seller Mrs Clayton Ward wife of late Alhambra Post Advocate editor. McEnnery is active in local clubs and veterans groups and serves as secretary of the Armed Forces Chemical Association Southern California Chapter. Properties span 123 125 127 131 133 and 135 North Garfield.
San Marino police report two burglaries this week. Ernest R. Davis home on Oxford Road was robbed of 120 dollars. A Shell Oil Station at 2135 Huntington Drive was also struck last Friday with 120 dollars stolen.
Paramount film crew visited the Lombardy Road home of Dr. Donald Balfour to shoot 1964 scenes with Alan Ladd. About three percent of San Marino residents gathered July 9 to watch. filming lasted two hours with vintage cars and an early Yellow Cab arriving first. production expected to finish by September for the 1964 release.
