The San Marino police report 14 local youths implicated in months of thefts and burglaries including ammunition hub caps liquor and a gun collection. Captain G E Norwine says the group will face no exit action after parents and youths explain and account for items.
A fragmentary column critiques administration taxes and fundraising, jokes about starting a fund for fallen arches, and quotes Carol M. Shanks on political responsibility. It notes jacaranda blooms and parking line complaints along the drive with light auto phrase humor.
A sparker set a palm tree in front of the R. G. Gould residence at 1885 Virginia Road ablaze on July 3. A failed garden hose doused the flames and the fire department responded. The palm tree was completely destroyed with only this damage reported.
A Texaco station operator at 2596 Mission street reports 104 spark plugs stolen Monday night. The plugs are valued at 65 dollars and the loss is not insured.
Brownie and Girl Scout troops held a two week Day Camp from June 17 to 27 at Marino’s Lacy Park. Thirty seven older scouts joined new activities including sports, nature study, museum exploration, and outdoor cooking with reflector ovens and open fires.
At the annual day camp directed by Mrs A F Le Grone known as Firefly campers earned two badges camping and trees under Mrs Alvan H Wilson retiring San Marino District chairman. Mrs Edward Rosenow Jr will assume duties. The luncheon for business women PTA reps featured floral park tables by campers.
San Marino Republicans send a strong California delegation to Chicago. Mac Intyre Faries is reelected National Committeeman. Mrs. Faries organizes entertainment for the women. Preston Hotchkis visits with eastern delegates. Frank E. Jorgenson and Mrs. Raymond G. Kenyon assist. Sid Cherniss serves as Assistant Sergeant at Arms. Arthur Heywood promotes the San Marino Platform. Knowland gains attention as a potential vice presidential candidate. Eisenhower votes may rise if the native son pledge frees delegates.
The first summer recreation event presents the annual operetta Make Believe Magic at 7 45 this evening in Hunting ton School auditorium. A 30 member cast from fifth through eleventh grades performs in a story about junior high students who want easy work.
The City Club Cards, PTA Show, and Scout Dads were tied for first after a season where the Cards beat PTA and Scout Dads briefly led. In the playoff opener Scout Dads defeated the Cards 18 to 8, with tight defense sealing the win and a tense late stretch. The Recreation Wreckers topped the Cards 7 to 6 in extra innings to finish the round robin.
Assemblyman Monte Burke named three members to the Republican state central committee for the coming year. The appointees are Frank E. Jorgensen of this city, Mrs. June Titus Goldie of San Gabriel, and Mrs. Helen Wysong Walker of Alhambra. They will meet in Sacramento early next month to organize.
Ted Laveson of San Marino receives the Royal Order of Vasa first class from Sweden for promoting international goodwill and U.S.-Sweden relations. A 800 strong crowd will gather at the new Statler hotel in Los Angeles for the ceremony hosted by the Swedish Club of Los Angeles with Swedish consular liaison.
San Marino will add three more voting precincts for a total of 28 in the November general election. County Registrar Ben S. Hite plans to add more than 600 new polling locations and related changes.
City Council meeting canceled for lack of quorum as Mayor Bell remains ill and members abroad. Hearings postponed a week, precinct changes noted, and voting logistics discussed ahead of the November 4 election with a September 11 registration deadline.
The junior division will be held with the senior and boys and girls divisions from July 21 to August 3. Entries for all divisions close on July 18. Entries may be mailed or phoned in to Atlantic 1-3163.
Carol Folsom, youth from Oneonta Congregational Church, writes from England on her tour of 16 countries. She notes Britain has loosened austerity since 1948 as rationing ends for gas and clothes.
A BPA committee works on re rating San Marino fire protection details aiming for reduced insurance costs. No city wide inspection promised yet, with a 1947 survey as baseline. Current changes include 18 firefighters on staff, eight on duty, a new drill tower, and a recently purchased pumping engine undergoing overhaul.
The Board of Education rejected C. F. Braun Company’s offer of an older office building and authorized notification to the offerer. Reports on conversion costs for San Marino showed either about 30 000 for storage use only or 20 000 plus for cutting, moving, and foundations. A private party is expected to negotiate for the building.
