San Marino launches a waste paper salvage drive before July 20 to help overcome a wartime shortage. Salvage chairman A. Skaer urges residents to collect magazines and newspapers and follow issued instructions to prepare material for prompt collection. The drive supports essential war activities including cartridge and explosive production and packing for overseas shipment.
Wirephoto shows Cpl Preston C Hurthle son of a San Marino family. He served over two years including training in Northern Ireland and England and took part in the D Day invasion of Normandy where he was wounded. The family learned of his status from a War Department telegram.
San Marino reports $150,876.50 in subscriptions toward a $1,900,000 goal with $392,123.50 remaining to secure by July 8. House-to-house canvassers, district chairmen, and retail stores push hard as progress varies. Marine Mission Market leads with $37,375 in sales, total $47,300 to date. Next week a special methods article is planned.
Maj. Harold M. Grey of 2035 Robin road was promoted from captain to major in the European Theater of Operations. Serving as chief of transportation under Brig. Gen. Frank S. Ross, he was wounded in action in May but returned to active duty last month after recuperation in England. His wife Marian and two children Harold Jr. and Marilyn reside at their family home.
The Community Council finalized a yearlong slate of directors for San Marino groups including San Marino Club American Legion San Marino P T A Council D A R Boy Scout and Girl Scout Councils and local clubs. A large at large roster was named by Clyde Holley with five elected for two years to serve civic welfare aims.
Photographs from this year's South Pasadena San Marino High School commencement are on display at Mission drug store on Fair Oaks Avenue. Orders may be placed there for copies or prints.
W D Hume a registered pharmacist who died Friday had worked 13 years at Oak Knoll pharmacy in Eagle Rock. He previously managed pharmacy at Los Angeles County General Hospital and ran a Texas drug store. Survived by his widow a son Ward D Hume Jr and a brother in Minneapolis.
A new group, the Blue Star Guild of the San Marino Community Church, formed to bond wives and mothers of servicemen. Mrs. Ben OConnor elected president with Mrs. Robert Gregg as vice president and Mrs. Earle H Jacobs as secretary treasurer. The first project aids wounded servicemen at Torrance hospital with bright tray covers and card tables. Members may donate at 1820 San Marino Avenue. The guild will also run the South Pasadena hospitality house on the first Monday each month, led by Mrs. A G Zima.
Vernon Barrett found an unidentified skull on Mt Wilson trail three miles above Sierra Madre near an old excavation two feet by seven feet long. Deputies investigate the white skull weathered by years in the mountains two feet deep in leaves and rubble.
Franklin Wallace Collins former editor and publisher of the San Marino Tribune is named in Who’s Who In America for 1944 45. He is noted for national affairs work and community leadership with entries also in the National Cyclopaedia of American Biography and the Encyclopedia of American Biography.
Franklin Wallace Collins born in Pompey Hill New York later changed surname to Collins built a long career in law journalism and public life. He held roles in Lincoln Nebraska Duluth and San Marino California and helped found John Brown University before becoming editor of the San Marino Tribune and author of Pepigrams and Jingles Rizal the Patriot and Martyr and other works. He died October 24 1943 leaving a legacy as a newspaper publisher and public club leader.
At 69 he brought wisdom from a rich life to a new enterprise and public causes. He practiced law in Nebraska during the era of Western settlement and led efforts that helped McKinley rise and prohibition gain ground in Montana. He published The Paramount Issue, recalled meetings with Dawes Pershing Mason Bryan, and attended Dawes 1940 golden anniversary.
Paul M Powell longtime Pasadena Independent managing editor died at home after two year illness. Funeral 10 am at Little Church of the Flowers Forest Lawn Memorial Park with private interment. Survived by widow Valerie Powell a daughter Mrs Lyman Williams of Berkeley two sisters Mrs Ann Hogan and Mrs Marguerite Todhunter and two brothers Harold and William R Powell a Los Angeles newspaper executive.
Pacific Electric Railway Company donated 100 old railroad ties to San Marino Boy Scouts for fuel in the two large fireplaces of their scout cabin. Dave Fisets, troop 4 chairman, arranged a truck to haul the ties, with help loading and unloading by Ted Botsford troop 5, and Jack Hull, Dave Dorland and Bradley Dewer of troop 1. An official of the railway company, a San Marino resident, arranged the gift.
Official figures show 1 884 820 ballots cast from 3 370 978 qualified voters in the May 16 consolidated primary. Democrats and Republicans combined saw the highest total for the U S Senate race with 931 630 Democrats and 718 010 Republicans participating. Democratic and Republican ballots also detail candidate totals for president and Senate races with Downey Houser and Tenney among leading names.
Mr and Mrs J E Comers of 2225 Sycamore avenue moved from San Marino to Phoenix Arizona on July 4. Mr Comer will work for Western Cotton Products Company a subsidiary of Anderson Clayton Company. Their son Joseph Jr 10 enrolls at Black Fox Military Institute Hollywood until they settle in Arizona. The Zobeleins have purchased the Comer home and recently arrived after his army discharge.
San Marino ends its first vacation church school after two weeks at 2102 Sherwood Road with more than 60 enrolled. Parents are invited to tomorrow's 11 o clock exhibits and worship service. Dr Henry David Gray of Onconta Congregational Church will speak to the children.
A San Marino Republican Women's Club luncheon will feature Albert W Hawkes U S senator from New Jersey and J Wallace Sterling Caltech faculty member speaking on the Republican National Convention. The Pasadena Republican Women's Club sponsors the July event with Mrs James Boyle as program chair.
The San Marino Community Council praises Greek War Relief Association in Reader's Digest June issue as saving millions of lives. Paul Sloggett notes relief ships from the United States and Canada provided daily rations of soup and bread for Greece during a three year occupation.
The eastern county section organized a regional affiliate of the California Young Republican club at a Sunday meeting. William Rajah Martin was elected temporary chairman as 35 members planned a vigorous membership drive. The group aims to study administration to appeal to special groups with a next meeting set for July 16 for citizens ages 21 to 37. Sycamore 6 3987 for more info.
Pasadena-San Gabriel Valley Bay Scout Council, including San Marino, is the third largest in California. the region's three biggest councils are Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. Camp Antonio sold out first eight periods. ninth period nearly full. a tenth period Aug 30 to Sep 6 added. Camp Bill Lane offers overnight trips up to six days. Training courses for leaders ongoing. den mothers may attend July 11 and 18 sessions at 94 North Raymond Ave Pasadena. San Marino residents may join two scoutmaster fundamentals courses. one class began last night in Pasadena, another tonight at St Stephen's School Monrovia Park hut.
Dr. John B B Condliffe of Yale University speaks at 11 o clock in Thorne Hall Occidental College in the first of three lectures in a college series on world employment and public mind issues. The program is free to the public as a community education project.
