A reflection on the 227th birthday of the United States recalling the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. It notes five captured by the British, twelve homes burned, nine died from war hardships, and that twenty four were lawyers or merchants. Carter Braxton of Virginia is named. See DECLARATION, page A-6.
The San Marino City Council unanimously approved Jack McLeod Raymond Cheng and Dr. Richard Sun as new Design Review Committee members at the June meeting. Monty Ross was named alternate commissioner from eleven applicants. McLeod Cheng and Sun replace Lee Benuska and Elizabeth Feffer who stepped down. Mayor Matthew Lin praised the strong candidate pool.
The Tribune hosts its annual 10K Run and Walk in San Marino with proceeds benefiting the San Marino Library Foundation. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. with the race starting at 9:00 a.m. across Huntington Drive. The parade, sponsored by the San Marino Rotary, leads to Lacy Park for 2003’s fireworks at 9:05 p.m.
Representative David Dreier led 224 Republicans in approving H R 1308 the All American Tax Relief Act of 2003 with a 225 to 201 vote. Democrats Schiff and Solis opposed noting limited reach but Dreier argued the bill boosts money in working families pockets and preserves the child tax credit.
Albert Chen and Russell McMillan, juniors at San Marino High School, attended Boy's State California 2003 in Sacramento June 21 to 28. More than 750 youths from across California participated in the 66th annual program funded by the American Legion to teach citizenship duties and rights. Chen and McMillan were sponsored by San Marino American Legion Post 239 led by Post Commander Robert Shryock, with the post meeting monthly at the Colonial Kitchen.
Southern California Edison will trim certain trees near power lines in San Marino from August through December 2003 to meet safety and reliability clearances. Only branches near lines will be removed, at no charge to customers, with homeowners able to hire private trimmers to balance entire trees before or with SCE inspections.
The San Marino City Council unanimously passed a 2003 04 operating budget after three sessions in a month. A projected 650000 shortfall remains, with reserves shaved to cover the gap. Future years look tougher as PERS costs rise, possibly widening deficits to 16 million next year.
The San Marino Chamber of Commerce invites the community to a July 10 mixer at Southwestern Academy, 2800 Monterey Road. Hosted by the San Marino Police Officers Association with catering by Los Tacos. Hours 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets 7 dollars for members, 10 dollars for nonmembers. RSVP to 286-1022.
The U S House of Representatives passed House Resolution 277 urged by Rep Christopher Cox and House Resolution 199 backing Hong Kong rights. It voices concern that Beijing backed security bills could amend the Basic Law to criminalize criticism, group membership, or attendance at prohibited meetings.
Cal Phil at The Old Mill on Saturdays July 19 August 16 and September 13 offers three free performances. The Mill opens 7:00 p.m. with music at 8:00 p.m. Reservations required by calling (626) 449-5458, on a first come, first served basis. Concerts feature California Philharmonic Orchestra ensembles, funded by Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, with Desertscapes CAC exhibition on display through September 10 2003.
