Judge Benjamin Aranda announced San Marino resident Gilbert Vasquez was elected to the Blue Cross of California board as the organization marks its 50th anniversary. Vasquez, executive partner of Gilbert Vasquez & Co., brings 20 years of public accounting and financial consulting, has led 14 boards, and served as 1980 president of the California State Board of Accountancy. He lives on Roxbury Road with wife Angie.

San Marino District Wins $222,511 Hardship Roof Grant
The San Marino Unified School District received a $222,511 hardship grant from the State Allocations Board for a new high school roof. San Marino was one of seven districts and the only one to receive the full amount requested. Work should start in the next few months as district officials also approve a tentative 1987-88 budget of $8,748,486 with foundation contributions expected to total $350,000.

Retirement Dinners For Moore Stephenson Held
Dignitaries and police officials gathered on Wednesday evening June 24 to honor San Marino Police Chief James W. Moore for 36 years of service across 14 cities. Speakers included law enforcement leaders and congressional representatives. Moore joined SMPD in September 1951, served in WWII merchant marine, Korea Army MP unit, and became chief in April 1963, becoming California’s longest tenured chief. Captain Jack D. Yeske will replace him, promoted through SMPD ranks since 1960.
