The San Marino City Council unanimously approves a $2 million police and fire assessment to be placed before voters if enabling state legislation is enacted. The measure follows the 1982 83 fiscal plan and awaits legislative action.

James M. Dennis elevated from associate VP to acting VP for student affairs at USC, directing Campus Life while continuing USC service since 1966 in health and education roles. He holds a PhD from USC and a degree from Occidental College, with postdoctoral study at Claremont Colleges. Dennis lives with wife Leslie and two sons on Kinghurst Road.
Hemming, survivor and American Cancer Society director from Northeast Los Angeles County, leads recruitment for the CPS II Lifestyle Research Study. The project will recruit 100 group chairs and about 650 researchers to enroll 10 families each, tracking six years of confidential questionnaires to explore lifestyle and environment as cancer causes.

Dr Dennis Denning was elected pastor of the San Marino Community Church at a recent congregational meeting. He preached at the June 13 service and was chosen almost unanimously. A California native, Denning grew up in South Pasadena and studied at Cal State Los Angeles UCLA and Fuller Seminary. He has pastored West Hill Presbyterian in Omaha for eight years. He and wife Susan have one son David. The family will move to San Marino in late July and he will assume duties in September.
The San Marino Community Chest exceeded its 79800 goal with over 100 percent raised by April 30. About 1000 residents contributed, gifts ranged from small amounts to 7.00, and nearly 20000 was raised via United Way designated gifts. Rotary leaders backed the campaign kickoff, and the Community Council praised volunteers and community involvement for ongoing 26 member organizations and improved communication.
San Marino officials remind residents that selling possessing using or exploding fireworks is illegal under City ordinance 726 section 2.02. Fire Chief Frank Storts notes confiscations by police and patrols before the Fourth of July and cites past residential fires caused by fireworks including some from so called Safe and Sane devices. Fire and police will continue to confiscate fireworks found during patrols and residents are urged to refrain from use.
Former San Marino City Councilman Joseph W Lewis received a tribute luncheon at the California Club for his decades of service on the school board and city council. Kenneth Veronda and other dignitaries praised his energy and time, while San Marino leaders and locals heaped thanks for his selfless contributions to the town.
