Longtime San Marino residents Robert C. Burford and his son Thomas C Banks died in a Jan 16 plane crash near Mt Baldy after a five day CAP search. Burford, 56, longtime Century City Alcoa executive, Navy captain, and San Marino resident, is survived by wife Madge, daughter Dorothy, son Robert Jr, and others. Banks, 1956 birth, San Marino High School graduate, worked in commercial litigation with Tyre Kamins Katz and Granof, survived by mother, Robert brother, and Dorothy. Combined funeral services were held at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, with interment at Forest Lawn Glendale. A memorial fund supports portable radio equipment for the California Wing Civil Air Patrol.

Sponsored by the Republican Women's Club of San Marino the event marks his first public appearance in the San Gabriel Valley. Reserve seats by phone with several numbers listed. $5 tickets payable at the foyer. Doors open 7:15 for reserved seating 7:45 for standbys and parking is ample around campus.
The San Marino Police Department releases a five year summary showing an average 1.6 fatal accidents and 1.8 deaths per year, with 2866 total yearly accidents. Mondays are the worst, 5 to 6 pm peak, and 16 to 19 year old men most at risk.
San Marino Unified School District Superintendent Dr. David Brown warned the Board of Education that Gov. George Deukmejian’s 1987-88 K-12 budget provides less than 1 percent COLA, far below the needed 3 percent to maintain programs and obligations. He contrasted past state funds and noted lottery money is counted as normal funding.
Two events at the Huntington Library will spotlight American history. Stanford professor George M. Frederikson speaks Monday February 2 at 8 p.m. on Whose Freedom? The talk is free with a reception to follow. Susan Danly discusses Documentary Photography and the Art of Edward Weston Tuesday February 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Overseer's Room, highlighting Weston and Farm Security Administration photography.
