Lin Meet the Candidate forums set for San Marino

The Lin for City Council campaign announces three open houses at San Marino Public Library auditorium on Tuesdays January 30 February 6 and February 27 from 2 to 4 PM. Reflectons Contest Winners Named by PTA Council

The San Marino PTA Council announced first place winners in the annual Reflections Program with entries from district wide participants. Winners span primary and elementary divisions in music visual arts literature and photography under the theme It Would Be Really Strange If with titles such as What if Flowers Could Talk Black and White City A Strange Tail If I was Big I Turned into a Butterfly If Books Came to Life and If Frogs Could Fly. Rogan Schiff Contest Highlights Campaign Flaws and Voter Response

In the Rogan Schiff contest the primary swung 51 to 49 for Schiff with Rogan’s ads accused of being mean spirited. After the primary Rogan mimicked a Democratic agenda but failed to win: Schiff increased his margin to 10 percent in the general. Rogan’s campaign suffered from poor grassroots work, disorganized district operations, and no Get Out The Vote plan. San Marino shows 70 percent Rogan in the primary and 68 percent in the general.

Kidnapping Trial Set to Go to Court Monday Morning

Four of seven defendants in the March 2000 San Marino boy kidnapping will face trial Monday at 8:30 a.m. in Los Angeles County Superior Court with Judge Lance Ito. Opening statements start Feb 5. two female defendants have pled guilty and face sentences by March.

District Seeks Applicants for Vacant San Marino Board Spot

The San Marino school district invites candidates for provisional appointment to the Board of Education. Applications are at 1665 West Drive and must be received by 4:00 p.m. January 31, 2001. Names are announced February 13, 2001, with successor named at the February 27, 2001 meeting.

Valentine School Drives Book Drive for Valley Elementary

Valentine School and Huntington students collect books from January to February 14 to aid San Fernando Valley Elementary School’s library, which has about 2000 volumes for 1200 students. Community members can receive donation receipts by contacting Janice Kuch or Gilda Moshir at the Valentine School office.

Photographer Watkins and the Yosemite Legacy in Photography

The piece traces Carleton E Watkins, a Oneonta native who joined the 1849 Gold Rush journey to California with Collis P. Huntington. Failing at gold, Watkins found work in a portrait studio and pioneered outdoor landscape photography using wet plate collodion negatives. His California and Yosemite works gained prominence in Hutchings California Magazine and New York galleries, with a 1867 Oregon trip noted before history continues on page A-6.
