Valentine Elementary Science Fair Highlights Speaker Week
Valentine Elementary wrapped up its annual Science Fair with Speaker Week featuring Dr Allan Abbott a parent physician inventor in 3rd grade and video of his hydrofoil. Dr Mark Wise Cal Tech professor engaged 4th grade with liquid nitrogen experiments. Dr Jacqueline Dervan Cal Tech chemistry taught 1st grade reactions. Dr Sally Newman Cal Tech geologist impressed kindergartners. Dr Jamie Knauss pediatrician demonstrated lung function to 2nd graders. Projects will be displayed January 30 and 31 in the Multi-Purpose room. Iris Robin and Jan Wilson chair the event and urge student participation.

A three hour Board of Education workshop drew about 140 residents and public comments favored reopening Stoneman School to provide 16 additional classrooms. No official action was taken though, as district officials consider cost estimates of about 170000 dollars per new classroom or renovation options.

City Urges Residents to Tidy Storm Debris After Wind Event

Taylor McCarrey an eighth grader at Southwestern Academy won the school level National Geography Bee on January 10 securing a chance at a 25000 college scholarship. Patrick Hyde placed second with several semi finalists named. The event open to junior high students kicks off the ninth annual competition sponsored by National Geographic Society and Sylvan Learning Centers.
