Naval career ends after fatal pneumonia death
Ray Smith a 20 year old Marine or naval serviceman died from pneumonia ending his career while serving in Chelsea Massachusetts. He had training at the Chelsea hospital and was originally from Woodburn Oregon. He graduated from Pennsylvania Marino School in 1939 and enlisted in June 1939. His funeral was held with military honors at Presidio. He is survived by his parents and sister Mrs C F Glaspell.

Organization Of Community Church Sunday
The San Marino Community Church will formally organize as a Presbyterian Church U S A member at 3 p m on Sunday January 26 at the Southwestern Military Academy. Draftees Called Today For Army Enlistment

Winter Blooming Aloes Beautify Huntington Drive Right of Way
The San Marino Garden Club led by Mrs. Wilber C. Thomas organized in May 1935 to beautify the Pacific Electric right of way in San Marino. After council cooperation and botanical guidance, winter blooming aloes and mesembryanthemum were planted with plans for permanent shrubs by 1936. By 1938 the project expanded to 2,500 plants with 600 ready for planting, funded by ongoing poppy seed sowings and park department work.

Stolen Packard Coupé Recovered in Westwood
A Packard coupe owned by J. E. Wheeler of 1780 Lombardy Road was stolen from his front drive in San Marino on Thursday night January 16 around 7 30 and recovered the next day in Westwood. The car had been abandoned by youths who were linked to a series of holdups in Los Angeles.

Monterey Road Home Entered By Burglar
A northwest city burglary Friday night between 4 30 and midnight struck the home of Benjamin Harrison at 2705 Monterey road. The thief entered through the maid’s room by poking a hole in the screen and later ransacked the house while the occupants were away. No theft occurred though candy was found missing from a box. The entry mirrored similar recent district burglaries.

San Marino Public Library Turns Eight With Growth
The San Marino Public Library marks its eighth birthday on January 16. It has a collection near sixteen thousand volumes and over four thousand patrons, who borrowed more than one hundred thousand books in a year. In 1940 patron registrations rose to 1,023, with loans totaling 110,924, up ten percent from 1939. The article notes needs for better lighting, more reference books, more children's librarians, and space for books and tables as the building adapts after a bond issue failure.
Two Injuries Suffered In Auto Crashes
Six auto accidents occurred in the past week injuring two people and damaging eight vehicles including a milk truck and a motorcycle. Mrs. Ralph Harrison of Azusa suffered a badly cut knee and was taken to Huntington Hospital after a crash at Huntington and Winston. Lloyd Chesterfield Campbell of Camp Baldy, the other driver, sustained a shoulder injury.
