San Marino Woman's Club Opens Year With Noted Speakers
The San Marino Woman's Club held its first meeting of the year at Huntington School yesterday afternoon. Landscape artist Charles Gibbs Adams and educator Mrs. Claire Soule Seay spoke on California gardens and the meaning of culture. Mrs. Philip Gough received the outdoor Christmas tree trophy, presented by Frank Collins of the San Marino Tribune. A tea followed, with decorations by Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. McCluskey.

Scholarships For High School Graduates Told
Announced by the South Pasadena San Marino Senior High School Principal's Office for 1940 41 freshmen scholarships. The University of Southern California offers 25 freshmen scholarships valued from 280 to 300 dollars for students in the top tenth of their class. Whittier College awards 18 scholarships from 125 to 400 dollars based on merit character intellect ideals and vigor with references evidence and examinations. Yale University also announced six freshmen scholarships.

Noted Jockey and Wife Robbed After Santa Anita Win
Leon Buddy Haas and his wife were robbed at about 3 am outside their home at 2714 Monterey Road after a weekend win at Santa Anita. Mrs Haas saved the wedding ring but lost a two karat diamond ring valued at $1000 and a gold mesh bag. Haas lost a diamond and ruby ring valued at $750 and $10 in cash. Two armed robbers wore white handkerchiefs. one approached Haas, who was driving with Mrs Haas after a Hollywood cafe party. The incident was reported to Officers Perry Archer and Tom Stewart.

Colonel Allen Receives Diamond Service Pin
Colonel Wayne Allen of the 160th Infantry was awarded a diamond service pin for 25 years of National Guard service at Exposition Park Armory. Governor Olson presented the pin as Major General Walter P. Story affixed it to Allen’s chest. Allen began service in 1915, served in France in 1917, and rose from private to captain by 1920.

British Aid All Star Show At Bridges Auditorium

George Hughey Nominated to Naval Academy
George Hughey Jr an 18 year old son of Mr and Mrs George Hughey of 516 Plymouth road was nominated by Congressman Jerry Voorhis as a candidate for the U S Naval Academy at Annapolis. Chest Drive Opens February 3 In San Marino
San Marino will hold its annual Community Chest drive from February 3 to 8 with a goal of $7000. The kickoff dinner is set for February 3 at 6 30 in the Huntington gymnasium under Mrs. Kenneth Good. A January 30 tea in the Huntington P T A room will train volunteers for eleven residential division colonels and the 1941 Chest cabinet led by Mrs. Rousselot.
