Phelps Wood, president of the San Marino Schools Foundation, reports the foundation’s first year shows strong progress. The alternative fund raising system has raised about $108,000 in pledges of cash and checks for the district, with the first year ending in March and expectations of continued momentum.
Dan Bryant home from college spotted three youths breaking into a gas station on Los Robles and Mission. He notified police after fleeing suspects dropped tool drawers and a window. Officer Petersen identified Jose Martin Sandoval, 20, of Los Angeles, among the would‑be thieves. Sandoval was taken into temporary custody. others fled.
Chet Mayo retires after 33 years as a Union Oil dealer, ending a San Marino run begun in 1956 when the Huntington Drive station opened. John Sweet takes over after Mayo’s last day January 5. Mayo plans open house and farewell. He toured the Navy, Real Estate, then gas stations, watching San Marino evolve with fewer stations and more banks and savings institutions.
The 1961 Grad Night sign up meeting for junior and senior parents is set for Thursday January 2. Junior parents gather at 6 4 pm in the orchestra pit to select jobs while senior parents meet at 6 45 pm in the auditorium foyer for committee signup. Grad Night chairs Lorna and Chuck Reed will present slides and outline this year's plan.
San Marino Planning Commission will hold a special public hearing to review the reservation system at Huntington Library on Wednesdays January 2 and January 28. City officials seek public input on Sunday use, parking, and visitor quotas with data from library staff and engineers.
About 34 San Marthans plan to attend inaugural events in Washington DC including a gala with Frank Sinatra, a Capitol Center ball, and a Kennedy Center gala. Organized by Republican Associates from Glendale, the trip runs January 17 to 21 with tours of Alexandria Mt. Vernon and Arlington Cemetery and a $40 fee covering most events.
The San Marino Teachers Association and School District approved a 63 percent salary increase for the current year, retroactive to December 1, 1980. Base rate up nine percent but phased, fringe benefits rise from 1120 to 1175 with partial-year effect, vision insurance added, and changes in teaching hours adjunct duties and workdays. Involvement included 80 percent plus ratification, with district leaders Tom Garnella and William Langton, and teachers Art Hansen Joseph Bayer George Adams Maureen DeArmond. Superintendent Dr David Brown noted Sacramento budget hints of state school funding gains for 1981-82.
