Mrs John Hoy and Mrs Chris O Camb received Golden Nugget Awards at Carver Christmas program on December 14. Chris is praised for daily lunch preparation and service to students, teachers, and staff. She also assists with the fifth grade picnic each year.
The Collectors Series presents a lecture on gems and minerals at the San Marino Public Library on Thursday January 19 at 7 30 pm. Dr Peter Keller curator of mineralogy at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History will discuss gem collecting from finding and evaluating stones to purchasing, with slides from the Hixon collection and references to gem societies.
The Huntington Library filed with the San Marino Planning Commission for a conditional use permit to add a one story administrative wing and replace the parking lot to serve up to 4800 attendees. Director James Thorpe says the changes will improve services and traffic, with the Historical and Cultural Zone created last December guiding the permit. The wing would be the fifth addition since the library opened in 1919 1920.
A dated municipal log records multiple emergency and public service calls across January. Entries mention medical balance, fire units dispatched to Lorain road and Huntington drive, alarms sounding, and services to Monterey road and California boulevard with times around 2:24 p.m. and 4:54 p.m.
A proposal details a central walkway linking gardens and buildings as services move to a new wing. The 15 600 square feet of space will be freed and renovated for scholars and library collections. Huntington aims to cap daily visitors at 4 800 under the Historical and Cultural Zone rules, reducing Sunday attendance from past levels.

Sherman Unkefer, financial counselor, will speak to the San Marino Republican Women’s Club in the Wentworth Room at the Huntington-Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday January 17 at noon. He will discuss government size, inflation, taxes, unemployment, and the dollar, urging taxpayers to urge Washington to cut federal agencies and lower taxes.
A community activity sponsored by the Rotary Club of San Marino in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and the Career Center at San Marino High School. It aims to explain job requirements educational prerequisites and aptitude and interest levels for occupations and to offer students opportunities to explore fields they are interested in. San Marino High School students are invited to on campus and off campus career and fashion events conducted by college representatives. Mills College in Oakland hosts Thursday January 12 at 3 pm. Cottey College in Iowa hosts Monday January 16 at 3 pm. Brooks College in California hosts January 17 at 10 15 am.
San Marino High School opens its 1978 season with 6 a.m. workouts as the boys swim team aims to defend its CIF title. A January 15 intra-squad meet will precede the El Dorado Relays on January 14. Standout seniors include Dennis Scannell and Ryan Harrison, with multiple All-Americans and CIF placers across events.
Dan Bryant criticized Bud Collier for breaking a pledge to retire after his current term and challenged him to a series of debates. Collier, 73, announced in 1976 he would run again, with a planned retirement if re elected in 1978, while Bryant pursues a vigorous door to door campaign urging voters for fresh faces in Sacramento.

San Marino caped a 10 2 non league run with a 61 57 win over Hoover before a 67 40 loss to Alhambra in a wild game at Alhambra. Miles Shanks led with 19 points as Jeff Capehart key baskets and Mark Taft sealed the finish. The Titans prepare for Rio Hondo League play without key forward Tait.
