A round faced man brandishing a chrome automatic pistol robbed Elwin V. Kriefer’s jewelry store at 2044 Huntington Drive near the Post Office Tuesday noon, taking gems, cash, watches, gold pieces, pearls and US bonds totaling about $9,000. Police describe the suspect as about 40, 5'10" and 190 pounds, wearing a tan jacket, dark grey pants and a light shirt, and suspect he may be linked to burglaries in Lynwood and Montrose.

Joseph G. Miller will retire March 31 after 21 years with the San Marino Police Department. He submitted his resignation at a San Marino City Council meeting. Curtis Dowds president of the SMHS Associated Student Body was nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis by Congressman Glen Lipscomb. Dowds, a SMHS senior son of Mr and Mrs Norman Dowds, earned the nomination through a competitive examination in Pasadena last November.
A San Marino School Tax Group outlines a two month campaign ahead of the March 5 vote on a 70 cent school tax increase. Committee chair William M. McKinley of Orlando Road led a January 3 planning session praising community discussion and School Board Plan II as residents’ five year improvement path. A related note reports a 980 Orlando place lot split approved by the Planning Commission into three parcels, and a Wil son Avenue split held over for further review by Charles Meriam.
