The city endured a frigid snap the pipes froze across neighborhoods with hundreds of water lines burst. Estimates show 50 homes facing pipe damage while 200 calls reported water outages as plants and ponds froze and auto storage froze overnight.

San Marino Kiwanis Club opened its year with a luncheon at Harry Raymond's where Jack W. Stevens outlined 1949 committees. Key figures include John M. Carroll as attendance chair, Dr. David W. Services were held for Joseph Breet Smith 52 of 2434 Adair who died December 29. The service took place Monday at the Church of the Recessional Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Survivors include Loreen Hewes a son William Hewes and a sister Mrs Otto of South Pasadena.
The Huntington drive at San Gabriel boulevard saw a year end step in widening east of the intersection. The gas station run by L R Schaub for over a decade was demolished and the rear real estate office building removed. The plan calls for four lanes on the south side and automatic signals to be installed within two months.
A San Marino woman, Mrs. M. E. Bell, slipped on an ice covered sidewalk at 2350 Huntington Drive yesterday noon while returning from the bank. She was taken by city ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital with severe bruises to her right knee.
On New Year's Day San Marino traffic chaos left four injured after a three car pileup on Huntington Drive near Granada. James Duke of Long Beach and his wife were hurt as the rear vehicle struck their car. Stephen Kuhle of Alhambra and family were among others injured when Kuhle stepped into another car. A second collision on Monterey Road near Kensington injured Barbara Simek and others. Police and patrol officers aided victims and transported them to Huntington Memorial Hospital.
Clyde Manning of 570 Rosemead Boulevard Pasadena drives a damaged car after a collision with William Wilson of El Monte at El Molino and Monterey. Wilson failed to see the stop sign and could not stop in time. No injuries reported. right side of Wilson’s car damaged as well.
The annual parish meeting of St. Edmund's will be held Tuesday January 11 at 6 30 p m in Huntington School dining room 1700 Huntington drive. Rev Charles Shreve will welcome attendees and deliver progress reports from parish groups and vestry nominees for the diocesan convention.
The 455th Composite Squadron U S Air Force Reserve will view the color film Topographic Mapping by Photogrammetric Methods this week to learn latest aerial mapping and photo interpretation techniques.
San Marino Legion Post plans January 11 dinner meeting at 6 30 pm at the San Gabriel Country Club with Paul F. Shafer as speaker. He will discuss How the Present Russian Situation Originated, sharing his Berlin experience as former Chief of Education American Military Government U S Sector Berlin from 1945 to 1947. Commander Robert V. Edwards leads the event.
The city’s post office posts a record year with receipts totaling $110,667 under Superintendent John M. Carroll. This 12 percent rise from 1947’s $99,052 includes December at $21,566 the highest month since opening and a 19 percent gain during Christmas season despite a slow start.
Three accidents occurred in a sixty minute span at busy intersections. Barbara Jordheim and Saul Greenberg collided at Canterbury Road. Greenberg and four passengers escaped injuries. Rudolph Holman was cited after rear ending Charles Rud at Baldwin Park. Jeanne McNerney began a left turn at Del Mar and Huntington, prompting police at the scene.
Rotary Lewellyn Jones, new member, will address the San Marino Rotary Club at today’s noon meeting at Pierre's on a topic of his choice. Last week’s meeting led by President Clarence Fetterman focused on fund raising.
Mrs. Georgia A. Houston of 1259 Sherwood Road won the Tribune sweepstake prize for a Christmas outdoor scene showing the Three Wise Men guided by a star above desert sands. The display drew many neighbors and nighttime lighting impressed observers. Dr. M. B. Durfee will discuss Child Guidance at Huntington School Auditorium January 6 at 7:45 p.m. as part of the Parent Education series.
A five foot three inch bandit armed with a Luger type pistol escaped after holding up El Rancho Market on Hunting ton drive Late Sunday afternoon. He rifled the safe took cash and checks placed loot in a paper bag and forced assistant manager Russell Cruse to the men’s restroom where he disrobed. Cruse called Arcadia police but the robber and money bags were not found.
City Clerk Randall Kerr reminds San Marino residents dog licenses are due by January 1 with renewal allowed later in the week. Fees are 1 dollar for males and 2 dollars for females. Business licenses become delinquent after January 15 with a potential 300 dollar fine. Bike licenses require registration only for new owners.
A pedestrian was struck by a car described as driven by Fred Carter Jr of 1955 Endicott Road. Carter said he did not see the pedestrian until impact. Both vehicles remained operable and no injuries were reported.
City records show San Marino new buildings valued at $6,948,173 for 1942, up $2,000,000 from 1941, per Building Superintendent George H. Crowshey. Permits in the year totaled $365,077 with 12 new homes, one office, and 21 remodels. March was the peak month at $804,000, while December saw the least activity.
A. G. Kruse of 1210 Lorain roads served as chairman of the judges in the Christmas home decoration contest held last week by Santa Anita Village Community Association.
