The 45th Tournament of Roses pageant concluded as a success despite rain. Floats numbered more than previous years and participants endured downpours with some sea princesses and mermaids unseen or rescued. Long Beach won the grand Sweepstakes Prize for its Queen of the Beaches entry.
A longtime San Marino helper, Mrs Albert E Sears of 1435 Mirasol Dr, has led local welfare efforts for five years. Beginning in 1929 as Huntington PTA welfare chair, she has served on the Community Council and represented San Marino on Pasadena's Council of Social Agencies.
Two leading San Marino music figures highlighted the Kiwanis Club ladies night program held last Wednesday. Miss Margaret Bent performed Rasbach compositions and was accompanied by Albert Adams, as Joseph Hill was installed as club president.
San Marino equestrian Miss Jane Brigham of 1470 Circle Drive will enter the Altadena Riding Academy second annual charity horse show on Saturday January 13. She rides Black Ace in thirteen classes held in morning and afternoon to benefit charity.
On January 1 1934 a building permit was issued in San Marino signaling a good omen for the year. George H Crowley building inspector issued a 5200 permit to Richard Campbell of Witmer and Watson 903 Architects Building Los Angeles for a 5 room single story residence at 1431 Pasqualito Drive. Wever and Davidge of Los Angeles will be the contractor.
Mrs C H Spradling will chair the January conference of the First District P T A to be held at South Pasadena Senior High School on January 11. Mrs E C Myers heads the reception committee for the San Marino South Pasadena Council. Luncheon reservations close today via Mrs Roy F Ensign at Wakefield 3503.
Police Officer Jesse Black chased a speeding motorist at 2 a m on January 2. The pursuing car overturned twice at the San Pasqual and San Gabriel boulevards intersection, tossing Black into the street. He was treated at Pasadena Hospital with bruises and lacerations. no bones were broken. He left the hospital to recover at home and is not yet ready to return to duty.
With Christmas and New Year finished, San Marino must raise 1900 more to reach the 4400 quota. So far 2500 has been subscribed, with the western end linked to South Pasadena in the drive. Subscriptions may be sent to Mrs. Sarah H. Nash at 1500 Ola Mill road or to The San Marino Tribune at 2655 Mission street.
San Marino dog owners must renew licenses for 1934 at City Hall this week. City clerk Harvey Joyce urges all residents with canine pets to procure their licenses immediately.
In San Marino a Sunday storm sent torrents through the city. Storm drains including the Raymond wash were overwhelmed as crews cleared debris from a large culvert under Wilson avenue to prevent erosion. Water threatened banks near Monterey road and two private bridges were affected.
Two Montrose residents recount New Year Eve flood losses to Tribune reporters as Mr and Mrs James L Brown recover at their daughter’s home. Browns, early Montrose settlers, lost home and belongings when swept from 2342 Granada, car buried, two of their property destroyed. Browns helped found Montrose chamber of commerce and local institutions.
