Huntington Parents Help Lighten the Load at Party

Huntington Middle School hosted its second annual friendraiser with Ed Yeager as Master of Ceremonies to raise funds for extra social studies textbooks. The goal is classroom sets for seventh and eighth grades to reduce heavy backpacks, with sixth grade sets already funded last year. Donations continue via the PTA for those unable to attend, benefiting the Lighten the Load Text Book Fund.

Library Invites Community to Building Design Workshops

The San Marino Public Library with Fields Devereaux Architects invites San Marinans to five design workshops. The kickoff on Thursday February 7 provides an overview of the building project, with February 21 and February 25 focusing on form, size, and neighborhood relation.

San Marino PTA Council presents Hans Christian Andersen tale The Emperor and the Nightingale at Founders Day 2002 on Tuesday February 26. City and Schools to File Joint Library Fund Application

San Marino city and its school district plan a joint application to obtain more than 5 million dollars in Proposition 14 funds for an 8.5 million library project. Vice mayor Betty Brown and councilman Bob Twist lead the effort with June 14, 2002, deadline. The city has about 2 million in reserves to supplement state funds and a shared parking plan is under discussion.

Reitnouer Endowment Scholarship Backed by Local Resident

Four second place awards of 500 dollars and two first place awards of 2000 dollars will be given by the Reitnouer Endowment Charitable Scholarship. Applicants must have a disability, be a Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic member, enroll in school, maintain a 3.0 GPA or show improvement, and reside or study within ZIP codes 90000 to 93599. Applications due April 2, 2002. awards presented June 2, 2002 at the Beverly Hills Hotel during the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic LATribute event.

Historical Society to Research LA Times Chandler Saga

On February 11 2002 Nick Curry a 1961 San Marino High School graduate and Huntington Library research historian will speak about the Los Angeles Times sale ending the Chandler family era in local ownership. Police Nail Suspect In Local Identity Theft Case

San Marino Police executed a search warrant in Los Angeles on Wisconsin Avenue recovering over 11000 dollars in new computers and arresting 29 year old Tyron Simmons. Detective Richard Ward noted a 73 year old San Marino resident was victim of identity theft with laptops delivered that morning. Authorities from Los Angeles County Sheriff's Identity Theft Task Force assisted, as Lt. Chris Petersen urged caution with personal data and warned theft's wide reach and harm.
