Huntington Library lands NEH 1 million challenge grant

The Huntington Library Art Collections and Botanical Gardens won a $1,000,000 NEH challenge grant, one of six California recipients. The grant, matched four to one, will fund conservation endowment, fire and security system upgrades, bibliographic record digitization and a system librarian, and compact shelving to double rare book storage. The initiative follows earlier gifts and aims to strengthen library services for 21st century research.

SMHS Alumnus’ Book Explores First Three Western States

Dr. David Alan Johnson, a 1968 San Marino High School graduate and Portland State University history professor, wrote Founding the Far West California Oregon and Nevada 1840 1890 to explain how California Oregon and Nevada formed Western society. The work analyzes politics society personality and memory across the three states and notes California miners moving to Nevada after the gold rush. Johnson also discusses constitutional writing and regional differences while noting his family ties to Sierra Madre Boulevard and his Burlingon Northern Award recognition.

Hoffman Foundation Pledges 5 Million to USC Business School

The H Leslie Hoffman Foundation pledged five million dollars to USC's School of Business Administration to fund high tech facilities. The gift announced at Hoffman Hall anniversary supports an electronic library, a 400 seat auditorium, multiple tiered classrooms, teaching tech, student lounges, and conference spaces.
