Mrs. Herbert D. Ivey urges Savlage committee to have households save waste fats from holiday meals to produce glycerine for gunpowder and war items. Citizens are urged to collect fat in cans and add bits of metal and rubber found during walks to boost local scrap drives.
A county health official warns that placing a baby in a wheeled market basket violates the Food Sanitation Act. Violations carry fines from 25 to 500 dollars or up to six months in jail, or both.
San Marino Red Cross production department closes today with reopening Monday January 4. Standard First Aid begins January 4 at the Chat tic 922 Huntington Drive from 9 30 to 11 30 with Patricia Curtiss instructing. Advanced First Aid starts January 6 and runs Wednesdays 7 30 to 9 30 at Stoneman School cafeteria for those who completed the standard course.
Ensign Margaret Archibald daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Archibald of 1815 Carlisle has completed WAVES training and is assigned to active duty with the United States Naval Reserves She left her decorating business in Los Angeles after five years to serve and was a member of the Huntington Memorial Hospital Clinic Auxiliary.
Memorials honoring lecturer Mary Blair Wallace will be dedicated at Oneonta Congregational Church in South Pasadena on Sunday January 3 at 1030 AM. The Mary Blair Wallace Foundation funds a memorial window by Judson Studios and a memorial study in the church tower. The window depicts an Upper Room scene with Jesus sending forth his disciples as James Elder Matthew and John appear. unveiled by husband James Wallace and daughter Mary Wallace.

John MacMillan Jr returns from six months as aircraft technician with Lockheed Overseas in Ireland and England. He plans a few days at ease before resuming work with the company. Also returning to San Marino are Clayton Parkhill Jr. and Brownell Merrell from six months abroad with the same firm, they expect to continue with Lockheed in other roles.
A New Year's Day of Prayer service will be held in the Chapel of the San Marino Community Church at 10 30 a m on January 1 conducted by Dr P Martin Baker lasting 40 minutes. The Chapel will be open for meditation and prayer throughout the day.
Mr and Mrs William M Heckler of 2718 Doresta Road learn that their son John A Heckler advanced from private to second lieutenant in five and a half months He enlisted July 2 at the Pasadena Post Office recruiting office and went through Fort MacArthur Induction Center Camp Barkeley Texas for officer training He graduated and was commissioned December 19 He attended Pasadena Junior College graduating in 1935 where he played football as guard and ran track He was part of the Lancers and MOS restrictive club After graduation he worked for power and mining firms in Arizona and later served as senior production clerk at the Los Angeles Shipyards for six months before enlisting
Three San Marino students at tending Princeton University were among those announced as having their scholarships continued. Arthur F. Pond Jr. will graduate mid-year. his brother Thomas A. Pond class of 46. Rez Robinson Jr. in sophomore year at the University. Recipients are chosen for above average academics. All three are graduates of South Pasadena San Marino High School.
Mrs. Hedwig C Lasseter will teach the English and Public Speaking class beginning January 4. The group meets at 7 30 PM.
Charles G. Lauderbaugh Jr., son of San Marino Rotary Club president Guy Lauderbaugh, left December 29 to join the Coast Guard, having received the call the day before. He is a first year student at California Polytechnic College San Dimas, and a Pasadena Junior College graduate.
Southern California residents face a new Victory Tax with an allowance of 624.00 per person per year. Individuals earning over 624.00 in 1943 must file by March 15, 1944, and employees pay 5 percent on wages over 12.00 weekly, while agricultural and domestic workers are exempt. Employers must file quarterly Form V-1 reports for wages withheld.
Dr George T Rudkin son of Mr and Mrs Charles N Rud kin of 1940 Lorain road departed Sunday December 27 for Grand Rapids Michigan to enter the Air Force Technical School weather replacement Training Center He recently earned a Ph D from California Institute of Technology and has led the Kercauff Marine Laboratory at Corona Del Mar California.
Rehearsals for the 1943 Fathers Night Show Ration Daze start with the first gathering of P T A fathers at Huntington School Auditorium Tuesday January 5 at 7 30 p m. The cast will be chosen and the initial number introduced. The show features pantomime music and the usual crowd of gags and performances. Boyd H Gibbons Jr leads a group based schedule to fit in multiple sessions before the finale.
A special two hour New Year's Eve musical extravaganza titled Frolics of 1943 will be presented at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Open only to service men and their dates, the show runs 8 to 10 pm. It is sponsored by National Schools with the U S O and Hollywood Victory Committee directing.
San Marino exceeded its War Bonds quota for the Rose Parade conversion, selling 46,575 dollars against a 37,800 target between November 23 and December 23. Local groups and residents donated gifts and support for Army Searchlight Unit servicemen, with clubs, scouts, and schools contributing meals, treats, and equipment during Christmas.
Wilkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Wilkins of 1507 Id Mill Road, was struck by an automobile while cycling on Fair Oaks in South Pasadena. He was hospitalized at Huntington Hospital for two days and has since recovered enough to be at home.
The State Council of Defense reports the Emergency Medical Service is prepared for disasters with 3,700 physicians and 6,000 graduate nurses enrolled. 996 casualty stations, 100000 beds, 4100 ambulances, and training centers support rapid response, with Red Cross sponsored nurse aides and new decontamination stations near hospitals.
