A damaged display and failing plans for Christmas lights faced the council until they learned repairs were possible. After assessing costs for replacing the broken star and defective bulbs, officials approved funding and the project revived, lifting public spirits.
The Christmas Tree Lane program in Pasadena and Altadena will be broadcast on Christmas Eve at 6 15 over KECA ABC. The James Boys Choir directed by John Henry Lyons will perform carols and Rev Edward Goodman of Calvary Baptist Church will offer an invocation. Elix Nash conceived the lighting event in 1920 and will switch on the lights to launch the display. The Broadway Department Store supports the broadcast with the Pasadena Kiwanis Club and Altadena Kiwanis Club coordinating traffic and arrangements. A collision near the Acacia Glendale station injured Mrs. Verna H. Eversmeyer and her two daughters Beverly and Mary with bruised foreheads while Mrs. Eversmeyer suffered ear and leg injuries. The family was riding in a car with two other passengers when a vehicle across the street struck their auto.
Harold E. Dryden was unanimously re elected president of the San Marino Community Council at the annual meeting in City Hall. Mrs. McIntyre Faries was named vice president Mrs Horwitz secretary and Dave Fiscus treasurer. Rockwood C Nelson reported the Community Chest total receipts 28385 against a 22036 quota and the council approved budgeting funds for the year 1948 plans to be begun at February meeting.
San Marino police announce new stop signs at Grandida and Huntington and Detmar Winston intersections. The city council approved the plan last month and drivers will be warned for a few days to adapt to the four way control now in effect for safety. Officers will enforce the new regulations.
City Council appropriated 650 to fund a street lighting project from PE Station West to Monterey Road after receiving reports from the police and engineering departments on the cost. Work began soon with materials and start of the project.
Funeral service for Mrs Elizabeth Ann Ray Kay held at Athiohe Church Alhambra last Monday. A Camden New Jersey native who lived in California over 26 years, she resided here 19 years. Survived by Lloyd D Kay husband and Robert L Kay son of this city.
Judges from Womans Club City Club Rotary Kiwanis Optimists and Soroptimists have been notified to select a directorate member. Judging will cover five classes including shrubbery doors trees under and over 20 feet and lawn decorations with visits Dec 22 to 30 and secrecy on locations until after December 30.
Dr John Van de Water spoke at Huntington School on the value of food to ease hunger and hatred in Europe. He said hunger breeds hatred and bread alone cannot cure it, calling for a new savior where none will go hungry. Farm leader Kermit Wisen urged that farming builds character alongside supplying food.
City plans to improve parking by repainting areas and enlarging spaces with two foot adjustments. Police say the new markings create wider aisles and designated spots to ease parking and prevent vehicle congestion downtown.
Dr. Percy Tilson Magan 1738 Chelsea road died Tuesday of a heart attack at Baldy View Sanitarium San Gabriel after a long illness. Funeral services will be private at 2:30 Friday at Covina Christiansen Mortuary. Magan, born in Athlone Ireland, studied at Battle Creek College and the University of Tennessee and held deanships at multiple colleges. He served as dean and president at the College of Medical Evangelists in Los Angeles and contributed as editor of Health magazine and author of several books. He leaves a widow two sons a brother and sister and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday at 3 pm at White Memorial Hospital Chapel Los Angeles.
Last week the City Council referred purchase bids for a new street department tractor to Paul Barton after opening three proposals from dealers. Shepard Tractor and Equipment Company bid 4456 dollars for a Caterpillar cover. Caterpillar, Smith Booth Usher and Company bid 4064 dollars for an International. Shaw Sales and Service offered 4290 dollars for a Chalmers.
Local chamber of commerce members met to name candidates for new offices and boards of directors. Nominees to the board of directors include Kenneth T Norris and others, with listed addresses and titles.
Advertisers and readers are reminded to prepare copy with deadlines at 6 p.m. December 22 for the Christmas issue and December 29 for the New Year issue. Papers will be delivered on Wednesdays to over 80 percent of San Marino homes.
San Marino resident Larry J. Sullivan writes My Tournament Queen a song gaining state and national notice. It premiered at the Royal Ball by Pasadena City College and Muir College and will be featured at Civic Auditorium December 19 and 20 with Tommy Jones orchestra. The tune airs on radio by Muzzi Marcellino and Hal Pruden and is planned for coronation events and other season uses. Sheet music displays are reported in stores.
Representatives from South Pasadena and San Marino churches met at the YMCA to plan a local church basketball league. The group discussed revival after wartime disruption and anticipated start in January with double headers likely at South Pasadena San Marino Senior High School gymnasium.
