A fire of undetermined origin at 490 Plymouth caused 7000 to 8000 dollars in damage to Winter Dean Jr. and family’s home. The house was unoccupied during the blaze, with one bedroom and bath a total loss and smoke, heat, and water damage throughout. Insurance covers the loss.
The Palm Center shelter now gleams with Christmas finery as Santa is due Saturday. A 40 foot tree, peppermint roof, candy cane markers and festive figures adorn the yard. Local citizens led by Lila Hentz and Alice Fiscus organized the transformation with many volunteers and city workers contributing.

Funeral services for William Salem LaLonde Sr a former San Marino resident were held at the Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens and Turner on Wednesday at 2 30. The Alpena Michigan born 82 year old died December 13 at his San Gabriel home after 30 years in California and 11 in San Gabriel. He left a wife Lettie C LaLonde a daughter Clarabelle Kennedy of Capistrano Beach a son William S LaLonde of Short Hills New Jersey four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Santa Claus will visit San Marino at 9 45 a m Saturday arriving by helicopter at the Candy House in Palm Center. He will meet children with gifts from 9 45 to 12 noon and 1 to 3 p m, with sessions for parents to bring kids in the afternoon. The event is sponsored by the Business and Professional Association.
The San Marino City Employees Association hosts a holiday gala for all city department employees and their families at the San Marino Public Library 1890 Huntington Drive. The party runs Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Entertainment centers on the Christmas tree with Santa giving goodies and a group carol singalong to close.
Final rites held privately for 87 year old Mrs. Eugenie G. Axtman at Turner Stevens and Eggleston Mortuary. Interment in San Gabriel cemetery. Born near Paris, France, she died December 8 after 50 years in South Pasadena. Survived by husband William S. Axtman and three sons, two daughters, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
Alfred B. Post of 2010 Lorain Road has been reelected president of The Los Angeles Society of Security Analysts. He has long served in leadership roles with the organization.
The San Marino Young Republicans Club hosted an open house at W. Bruce Terrell's home drawing about 70 people to kick off the Christmas season. Food baskets were distributed today to four Los Angeles County Bureau of Assistance selected families. Nominating slate announced for next year includes Charles Macbeth, John Clary Jr., Mary Bettleheim, and Terrell with elections January 12, 1954 at 35 Mill Canyon road.
The Christmas edition of the Tribune will be delivered on Wednesday. All correspondence and advertising deadlines are moved up by one day.
The Council approves codifying all city ordinances and the City Attorney will sign an agreement with Michie City Publications Company of Los Angeles this week. Estimated cost is about $4500 depending on the volume size, with the project aimed at reducing future San Marino legal workload.
San Marino joins in a county wide stance that the County Board of Supervisors holds sole responsibility for air pollution control under the Air Pollution Control Law. Edward L. Nelson has resigned from the Recreation Commission and the City Council has accepted the resignation with regrets. He formerly resided at 2941 Gainsborough Drive and has long been active in the Twilight League and other athletic activities. His successor has not yet been named.
Dun and Bradstreet reports City Now has more than 150 businesses in San Marino. The survey lists 126 commercial enterprises commonly buying on credit, though some service establishments are not counted in the total.
John E. Sisson is ranked number two in the United States for veteran singles in 1953, with Lewis A. Bond at eighth, in New York announced rankings. Sisson rose to fame last autumn by upsetting Tony Travert. John Cranston sits sixth nationally in junior singles.
