The San Marino School Board on Tuesday night approved submitting an application to institute a school work program next semester after a 26 percent response from a 350 member business survey. Of those, 26 expressed immediate interest and 15 suggested they might participate later, with merchants citing willingness to meet a $1.25 per hour minimum. San Marino Names New Building Official and Planning Secretary
J Eugene Pearce of South Gate will become San Marino building official and Planning Commission secretary on January 24, replacing Philip Mayo who is called to Navy duty. Mayo, a chief petty officer and Sea Bees builder, will leave at month end and report to Port Hueneme, with potential Viet Nam deployment. Pearce, 38, has been South Gate director of building inspection and planning since 1961 after roles in Monrovia and as a general contractor. He is pursuing a law degree part time and holds studies in engineering and public administration. Mayo expressed appreciation as he departs for Navy service.
