San Marino sees its first Christmas street decorations as Huntington drive hosts a block long Candy Cane Lane. Fifteen eight foot candy canes adorn palm trees from Kenilworth to Delmar, attached with clamps and angled over the street. Merchants, led by Better Gardens, funded and erected the display, praising the result and vowing to expand next year.
Last Friday night Santa Claus toured the drive to delight children and parents, the first pre Christmas visit in city history. Huntington and Stoneman School signals malfunctioned, waking neighbors, while officials approve $100 for new decorations. Inflation note cites 1802 stands costing $202 versus $79,000 for the upcoming inauguration.
City Council revisits proposal to erect protective fences along all storm drains after a resident petition and prior wartime studies. The bond issue funding failed in October 1947, leaving no current funds, though officials aim to schedule the work soon despite financial constraints.
Several auto accidents over the weekend left minor injuries and damaged cars. George Weisbrich of Arcadia received a cut hand after a head on collision with Edwin Johnstone of Bellwood road on San Gabriel boulevard. Ed Wright of Pasadena struck a palm tree on Granada avenue due to fog, suffering a nose injury. Martin Gilbreath of Los Angeles rear ended Ernest Welke of Cumberland road at Palomar and Huntington drive. both drivers escaped injury though Gilbreath’s car was towed.
The fifth annual installation of San Marino Lodge No. 685 F and AM takes place Saturday December 18 at the Masonic Temple South Pasadena. George R Friederich will be installed as worshipful master with other officers named including Wilbur Teets Earl Lyons Stanley Arndt and Ralph Gorman. Retiring Master George Best will give the welcome address.
Stanton Pete Welsh a Pomona College athlete and his wife Nancy narrowly survived a head on collision in dense fog as they returned from a basketball game in Brea Canyon. Geoffrey Ayres and Donald Bacon died from the crash. Mrs Ayres is critically injured and Vivian Horbath died of her injuries. Nancy and Pete are recovering from shock and minor injuries.
A Buck Tracy panel truck registered at 231 N 1st St Arcadia was found abandoned after midnight on San Gabriel Blvd. The southbound vehicle skidded 60 feet, hit a curb at Rose Ave, and ended on a residential property. A woman's purse with checks and nearly $50 was found inside. Driver unknown. employees held keys.
San Marino residents will hear the combined choirs of San Marino Community Church in a Christmas all music service at Huntington School Auditorium on Sunday December 19 at 7 45 p m Ken neth White director of music at the church and Huntington School Glee club will conduct the choirs separately and together and will present a women s chorus ensemble and a male quartette Organist Mary Elizabeth Caldwell will direct one of the choirs A candle light pro cessional and beautiful lighting are planned with carols both well known and lesser known and an evening of peace and goodwill to all awaits all.
The San Marino Tribune announces its Christmas issue will be released a day early. Submissions from subscribers contributors and advertisers must reach the Tribune office by Monday December 20, the deadline for this issue.
James B. Francis died at age 80 with private services set for 10 am at Little Stone Church Turner, Stevens and Turner Alhambra. Survived by wife Mary V. Francis two daughters Mrs Ellis and Mrs Walter Ulrich a grandson Leland Ellis two sisters Mrs Elizabeth Weaver and Mrs Rose Lowery and one brother William Francis. He lived 22 years in San Marino creating the San Marino Market then worked at San Marino Mission Market.
Firefighters were dispatched Tuesday afternoon to the Thomas Gogo home at 1380 Waverly Drive. They extinguished flames in the entrance hall woodwork after a furnace was left on high with ducts closed. One entry hall duct near the dining room overheated and ignited.
City Council approved using 10 extra police to direct traffic on New Year’s Day. Chief Glenn F. McClung announced the plan at the last meeting. Officers will man key intersections and enforce traffic regulations to be published before January 1.
The City Council will hold a hearing next Wednesday at 7 30 PM on proposed zoning changes to remove self service laundries self service gasoline stations used car establishments and auto wrecking yards within city limits.

L. E. Shepard of West Haven road was unanimously elected president of the San Marino Community Council at the annual meeting in City Hall. He succeeds Harold E. Dryden who retires after two terms. Other officers include first vice president Joseph Bones, second vice president Mrs. McIntyre Faries, secretary Mrs. Leon Horchitz, and treasurer David Fiscus.
Members of San Marino City Club accepted unanimously the nominating committee report at the regular meeting in Huntington School cafeteria and elected officers Norvald T. Ulvestad president J Bert Easley first vice president Beach D Lyon second vice president E M Peterson secretary E Randall Kerr treasurer. Elected to the board of governors were Paul Cunningham David Fiscus and Rockwood C Nelson. The new president has served on the board for two years and in club affairs for more than five. he resides at 2936 Shakespeare drive. Ulvestad is assistant trust officer in Citizens National Trust & Savings Bank and assistant secretary since 1943. Members of the Men's Club of the Community Church were guests. Paul Covey Johnston head of Stanford Religion department gave a Christmas aligned talk. Turn to page eight.
Col Joseph N. Owen of San Marino led the Los Angeles Bar Association Christmas Jinx show at the Breakfast Club. The Community Chest drive totaled 29,900 with new organizations joining the San Marino Council, including Optimist Club and PTA councils.
San Marino Garden Club met for its Christmas gathering at the San Marino Community Church. President S. Phillip Stay spoke on European Christmas customs now part of American celebrations. Mrs E Beaman shared legends to frame Wayne Long, Whit e artist, who demonstrated home Christmas arrangements and ceramics.
