Louise Liebhardt reports Marino schools burst with holiday spirit as students exchange gifts and decorate rooms. From Huntington to Wage Street, classrooms display nativity scenes, chalk art, and paper decor, all leading to a schoolwide Christmas Eve program and a promised visitor.
Children from Huntington school staged two Christmas plays to mark the holiday season. The 3B class performed A Happy St Nicholas Day in Holland with each student speaking, including wooden shoe costumes. Later, Kenneth White’s 8B class presented The Bellman of Mons about a pipe organ needing a pure heart, with the Boys Glee Club singing three numbers.
James L. Beebe of San Marino was nominated last week for president of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Other officers named include Eugene Battles Carleton Tibbetts and Clark E. Beil. Beebe, born 1889 in Udall Kansas, studied at Fairmont College and Harvard, moved to Los Angeles in 1922 to practice law, and became a partner in O Melveny Tuller Myers in 1927.
One hundred seventy two students take part in the annual Christmas pageant during assembly at South Pasadena San Marino Senior High School. Three scenes by Hester Lauman emphasize joy peace and brotherly love. A repeat performance will be next Monday at 8 15 pm open to the public free. Props by art classes and set work by manual arts students. Special thanks to Bob Jordan Margaret O Connell and Bob Compton for design work on curtain window and tree.
The Huntington school arena hosts the Boy Scouts annual Christmas party next Monday at 7 30 pm. Three troops will present acts including Drizzlepuss Harman and Stooge Little with sleight of hand and levitation and the trained terriers Pandora and Speedax. An Accordion Swingtette from John Marshall Junior High performs, plus Christmas carols led by Eagle Scout H B Robison with pianist Oscar Rasbach. Refreshments follow as the event aims to become an annual holiday tradition organized by Scoutmasters and troop committees.
Eight houses began construction in San Marino this month boosting total building permits to 66 178 dollars. Mr and Mrs Wallace L Chadwick at 2565 Monterey Road received a 9000 dollar permit for an eight room two story Monterey style house at 1133 Lorain Road designed by Marsh Smith and Powell of Los Angeles with contractors C J and Carroll Nordquist of 6257 Pine Crest Drive Los Angeles. Other residents in Pasadena area started new homes with contractor F J Zimowski.
San Marino's Playground Touch Football team coached by Ray Bryce will compete in the Rose Bowl elimination tournament at Santa Anita Park Arcadia on December 21 at 9 AM. Fourteen teams entered as local squad restages practice at Huntington on Monday against Washington School of San Gabriel. lineup features 13 14 year olds and captain Henry Torres with players Watson Guio Harris Keen Carlin Campbell Thurnber Gregory Gschwind Vanderhoof and Lindsley Nuccio Welsh Smith McKenzie.
The U S S Nevada welcomed a group of Mariners Girl Scouts last Saturday. Chaperoned by Mrs. Jacob Minder the Scouts left San Marino at 10 00 went to the Navy Landing at Long Beach for a luncheon then departed in an open motor launch escorted by Ensign W S Finn. They toured the battleship from stem to stern gaining much interest.
South Pasadena San Marino Junior High presented The Candle in the Forest at the school auditorium to benefit the needy. Admission was one can of food donated to the Home Circle Service with the performance by Prop and Cues Drama Club.
A lyrical fantasy about Blue Boy and Pinkie dreaming of moonlit dances, secret gardens, elves and fairies. They plan to explore hidden habitats of Brownies, watch flowers feed bees, and return at sunrise, sharing playful garden fetes through changing seasons.
The San Marino Woman's Club hosts a December 21 meeting at 2 30 p m with Maryse Conde soprano and Mary Louise Bulkely pianist in seasonal music and dance from France Austria India Spain America and Portugal. Dancers Tihmar and Jarnac perform while Irene Dalton accompanies with classical pieces. Tea will be served in the gym after the program.
Arthur G. Kruse of San Marino was elected president of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce to succeed Albert Beyer Jr. New officers were named and a revamp was adopted including weekly executive committee meetings and a monthly full board gathering. Kruse pledged civil group support for restoring the San Gabriel Mission in Alhambra.
San Marino midgets elect officers after a Monday meeting. A major race is planned for Sunday January 1 at 2 PM, sponsored by Richfield service station, with twelve cars expected and spectator arrangements in place. Ace Weber to lead parade entry in Roses Tournament and car covered in flowers. Spinner Patten won last week’s helmet race. repairs sidelined all but one car.
About 125 members gathered December 13 at Mrs. George W. Van Vorst home for a talk by Miss Margaret Preminger on oriental flower arrangements linked to poetry. Mrs. Whittemore and Mrs. Ensign participated, with a gardenia planting demo by Mrs. Chester A. Swift and a plan to display lighted trees in members gardens.
City Council with acting mayor H Stanley Bent presiding passes five new ordinances Nos 310 323 325 326 327 and opens bids for a truck chassis and a steam roller. Police cars bought for 3504.80 from Fortner and Loud. sidewalk petition on West Drive referred to the city engineer. other measures include gasoline oil rock sand gravel bids and traffic improvements near San Marino and Longden avenues.
