A visitor extols the Huntington Library and Art Gallery grounds praising the world spread plantings. The cactus and aloe displays dazzle with vivid reds yellows and pastels while magnolias holly and poinsettias add seasonal color, with more details promised on a later page.
The City Council voted 250 toward a San Marino float in the Tournament of Roses Pageant, with Tribune pledges totaling 305. The group abandons a Sweepstakes Entry and will create a complimentary float costing 750 built by the same artist. Contributions are invited at 2655 Mission Street San Marino. receipts will be issued.
Under Alhambra Inter-Club Council the Old Mill Players bring The Guardsman to Alhambra High School Auditorium next Monday. Willard Davis stars with the same Fred costume from the film version while Miss Margaret Bent leads in gowns modeled after Lynn Fountaine’s Theatre Guild design.
The Oneonta Club led by President Dr Frederick A Speik and Chairman David L Brainerd hosted about 200 members at the Woman’s Club in Pasadena on Monday night. Guest of honor Coach Howard Jones of USC attended with six Trojans, including Sparling, amid praise for the team’s performance against Notre Dame. Captain Tay Brown also appeared to an ovation.
San Marino alumni of the University of Southern California were honored in a wide program from the 5th to the 10th with campus groups, lectures, and open houses. About 100000 spectators saw Troy defeat Notre Dame, as San Marino residents and graduates participated in the reunion. Notable locals listed include Fred Hovey Weinrich and Elsie R. Veranda among others.
Mayor Lacy presided as 21 councilors and city officials attended the overflow session. Bids opened for police station alterations and 500 feet of fire hose drew competition from five firms with hose prices from 1.10 to 0.55 per foot and the police station bid from R Royden Hopper at 8222, accepted after credential review. A protest by Mrs. Ethel Wade objected to unsolicited advertising material dumped on her Ardmore road property.
Chief Parker urges residents to post a prohibitive card on doors to stop agents peddlers solicitors and beggars before a holiday. He warns box car tourists roam from door to door and claims soliciting is used by thieves to gain entry.
