Police Officers Association in San Marino voted unanimously to reject a tentative contract offer that would have given a series of pay increases from July 1988 through April 1990. City officials lamented the vote while pledging to continue negotiations, with the council set to discuss the matter at its regular meeting.
San Marino police report two bank robberies at Sanwa Bank on Huntington Drive within six days. In the first incident a man fled with cash after showing a handgun concealed in clothing. a second suspect, described as a white male 5'6" and 125 pounds, used a simulated weapon. An alarm was triggered via an Alhambra branch, delaying police notification but not the robbers’ escape.
City officials unveiled plans for a $150,000 renovation next year to add a handicapped ramp, convert the fire engine bay into offices, relocate the building department to the first floor, and refurbish the City Council chamber. Funding comes from federal grants, leftover revenue sharing, and a workmen’s compensation suit. Construction may start after February bid awards, with completion targeted for July.
