San Marino residents decorating for Christmas compete for generous gift certificates from the Business and Professional Association. City Attorney Charles R. Martin says decorations will be judged December 24 to 27 on Christmas spirit. Judge selection will precede final picks across city sections. Winners announced in The San Marino Tribune.
Superintendent Elmer C Neher said San Marino schools will close December 18 and reopen January 3. He noted confusion due to differing Christmas vacation dates compared with Los Angeles city schools.
Citizens will join a festive caroling night organized by Girl Scouts with groups of Brownies and older troops visiting shut ins and then returning to school for refreshments. Troops 137 67 and 1 will meet at Stoneman School at 6 15 PM to start.

Burglars entered the Oak Knoll residence of Robert S. Hirsch in San Marino through a south window last weekend. A bedroom was ransacked and jewelry taken though more valuable items were left undisturbed. The intruder consumed part of a bottle of rum and helped himself to a fifth of various liquors before fleeing the scene.
Applications for Civil Defense ID tags are available at San Marino City Hall through December 31. The tags cost 25 cents and are supplied by a national company. Each stainless steel tag lists the wearer's name address emergency contact birth date and religious preference with a beaded chain for neck wrist or wallet use. The program aims to aid rapid identification during enemy attacks but is also useful in fires floods hurricanes tornadoes and accidents. It is overseen by City Manager C. E. Chick Martin who also directs Civil Defense.
Bobby Ball eight year old son of Mr and Mrs R W Ball of Plymouth road is recovering from a fractured wrist and a lacerated head. He fell from a ladder at his home and the ladder struck his head. The accident occurred Sunday.
The San Marino Community Chest reports 1955 drive totals of 38,727.44 as of December 12, nearly $1,000 above last year. Dr Bernard Hyink, elected president, succeeds retiring Dr Ben Patton. Basil Reynolds named treasurer. Betty Thomas re elected secretary. New executive committee members include Roy McGinnis Allen Laws and Sid Wail. Organizational directors and donor directors were nominated by Stanley Arndt. The drive trails the 47,162 goal but late contributions may push it over.
Four football players Tom Cottle Ron Glasoe Brad Peery and Sam Self received awards at the fourth annual high school football banquet honoring the undefeated Rio Hondo League champions Our Titans. Co captains Cottle and Glasoe MVP Peery and most improved Self were feted as coaches spoke on athletics.
Margaret J. Pontius 71 wife of Ira R. Pontius of Anne Drive died at home after years of ill health. Funeral plans not set, Baldwin Park Mortuary to direct services with interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park. She leaves a daughter Mrs. Herbert G. Martin of San Gabriel, two sons Robert Roy and Carl N. Pontius of Arcadia, a twin sister, and five grandchildren.
Dr. C. C. Trillingham, LA County Superintendent, reports San Marino Unified School District population rose 70 percent over ten years while county enrollment doubled to 1,121,387, highlighting rapid growth in local education and overall county schooling.
Dr J Ronna of Sherwood Road died December 7 at his home after a long Pasadena dentistry career begun in 1915. Survived by widow Genevieve two daughters Verna Hemler and Mrs John Mehar g, a sister Mrs Ross Welch of Los Angeles entombed at Mountain View Mausoleum.
The San Marino post office will stay open Saturday until 6 p.m. to handle the Christmas mailing rush. Daily hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and no other changes are noted.
Santa Claus will visit San Marino ahead of Christmas to check on local youngsters and adults. He is scheduled in the San Gabriel boulevard district December 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. and in Bedford Del Mar from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. later rounds cover Chelsea and Mission districts Friday with weekend gifts in Chelsea decorations. The San Marino visit is arranged by the Business and Professional Association.
Funeral services for A G Carter of Los Robles avenue will be held at 10 a m today at Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena with Rev Thomas A Williams officiating. Interment will be in San Gabriel Cemetery. He died last Tuesday at his home after living in Pasadena 31 years. He was a past president of Pasadena's Men's Club. He leaves wife Pearl V two sons Jack H Carter of Eureka and Alfred Jr of Arcadia, plus two brothers and two sisters and five grandchildren.
San Marino High School hosts a two day tournament with Bellflower facing South Pasadena at 7 p.m. and San Gabriel High at 8 15 p.m. Friday features the championship between winners and consolation game between losers. An all tournament team will be selected by coaches with trophies and gold basketballs awarded.
San Marino fans packed Santa Barbara as the Titans crushed Santa Maria 48 to 7. Brad Peery led with four touchdowns including an 83 yard punt return, while Skip Face added a touchdown and two extra points, and Pete Roch contributed big plays on defense and offense.
City of Hope fundraiser run by the Cobra Car Club and San Marino Exchange Club to assist residents and fund required vehicle safety checks. Police Officer Ira W McKay supervises volunteers who will inspect brakes lights steering tires exhaust glass wipers mirrors and horn with calls to Atlantic 2-2131 or 2-5707 to sign up.
The Planning Commission rejected Roy Long of 1260 Sherwood Road for a combined residence and office at Granada and Sussex. It granted Mrs. Alice Stearns at 2800 Lombardy Road approval to split her property into three lots with the house on the middle parcel. It also approved W. J. Moran to subdivide Lot 30 in Tract 2949 on Virginia Road into three parcels after moving a building from Parcel Three to Parcel One.
